This is the kind of story that is only amusing in retrospect. I used to fly into Newfoundland regularly when I was in the RAF. They have a penchant for salt cod up there, too. I only made the mistake once. It took a couple of pints of their revolting beer to wash the taste away!

Luckily, I had my standby imitation crab--in two minutes I whipped together a one-minute faux-bisque--milk/marinara base.

You can buy salted codfish? I know of smoked salmon which is pretty salty but you don't have to cook that. What dish did you end up making instead? You have such a humorous way of summarizing about Lot's wife. I always felt sorry for her.

Well that fish dish sounded awful, Liz. Too bad the store overloaded it with salt and ruined your dinner with your friend. Hopefully, you ordered some decent takeout. I agree with you about why the company added so much salt.
Respectfully, Jan

Cod fish caper
Too salty for Capers
I misread the label
Brought yuk to the table
Guest puckered
Alum smothered
My good intention
Brought indigestion
The cat ran away.
I can relate. My wife's 90+ grandmother lived alone in a stinky, unkempt house. She invited us to dinner. Homemade tamale pie... All the ingredients were wrong and old like her. It smelled terrible and tasted like an over-salted dead dog. Yes, I've eaten dog in a land faraway. I had to prove my worth. But I didn't have to prove anything with grandma, and my stomach protested vigorously.
Good luck with your next dinner.

My grandmother from Newfoundland and my Canadian dad always enjoyed salted cod. If I remember she would soak it for hours before cooking. I can imagine when you tasted this it must have tasted like putting a whole container of salt in your mouth.
I hope you had a substitute dinner to serve Gale.
Very good story at your expense.

What a bad experience! It's easy to cook fresh fish. Just buy a fresh fish steak or filet, cook it in a hot oil, add some ginger, scallion and garlic and soy sauce. Cook for about 10 to 20 minutes depending on the thickness of the fish filet or steak. You can add some wine and vinegar, too to make it smell pungent.
Well done with the humor.

Thanks--love your recipe!

That sounds good, too.

I got the fish from the food pantry where I volunteer--I found out this afternoon that they gave it out unawares to more than a hundred people as part of the standard grocery bag, which typically has plain frozen filets. Surprise!!!

Hello Liz.
Since my wife doesn't allow me to cook fish in the house, I have never had this experience. I can't imagine taking a taste of the fish and feel like I'm working a salt lick. That would probably finish my taste for fish indefinitely.

Nicely written dinner event. Yuck, you were clearly tricked. There should have been a high blood pressure warning on it. Thanks so much for all the info and links.

Oh, I guess I can tell you now. I wrote Sisyphus and I'll Fly Away. The funny ones! Sisyphus came in second. I don't know what is happening with I'll Fly Away.
-
Yes--I knew that--found out when I visited your profile--I was giving you a sly hint that I knew it was you@
-
Oh duh. Sometimes hints, especially sly, zip by. I just won an honorable mention in the Haiku contest. Funny, the voters here seem to be sophisticated. The entries that won were decidedly better than mine.

This is fun with a biblical twist. I'm not sure if you had a judgment in your mouth or a lack of judgment. I enjoyed this so much. I hope you've recovered. Something sweet might have helped.
Sending my very best as always,

Oh yukkkkkkk.... overly salty is ghastly! So what did you end up cooking for dinner? Did you have to resort to take-outs? I admire the simplicity of your culinary offerings. Your story is told with suitable lip-pursing, eye-squinting, and gagging retches... with a Biblical story thrown in for background.
If they are still selling salted cod someone must be buying the stuff, apart from your inadvertent purchase.
