e,

While I have never been to Kentucky, I have been to several, several, SEVERAL dog races. *smile* And I have to imagine they are quite similar. At least, in reading this, they appear to be. hahaha Your descriptions are uncanny! You put me back there and into those moments. The hawkers at the front gates selling THEIR versions of the Betting Forms, the whispers about which dogs {pooped} when they were being walked. hahahaha

Oh, my. So much beer! So much fun!

This was brilliant. Well worth a six!

Thanks for the sixer again. This memory is a memory of Belmont Park, actually. Another historic track and one I attended for a couple of decades, at least 3 times a year. Saw a lot of great horses, a lot of great races. Lost more than I won. estory

As a lifetime owner, breeder, and thoroughbred trainer, this story touched spots within me that brought back a rush of butterflies and goosebumps. Thoroughbred horse racing to me is the most fun you can have with your clothes on, and who knows, maybe even off, and you described it so well. Thanks for sharing your outstanding read. I wish I had a very deserved six!!!

Thanks for the excellent review and I am glad my piece was able to bring back those moments on the track for you. Belmont was a great old historic track, and I was lucky to have watched some great horses like Easy Goer and Turn Back the Alarm in person. estory

I've spent time in New York at Belmont, Aqueduct, and Saratoga. My ex is still vice-president of Breeders' Cup, and I've been to every Breeders' Cup since its inauguration in 1984. I have enjoyed everything of yours that I read.

I think we've all had that feeling of elation and then deflation when we try our hand at any type of gambling. Horse racing is one of the more interesting ones. Most of us know when to quit before we lose more than we can handle, but unfortunately there are those who have to refrain from participating at all. You've conveyed it well in this story. Thanks for sharing.

Thanks for the excellent review and your wonderful comments supporting the piece. We used to go through pretty much the whole 3 year old campaign, from the Derby trials through the Triple Crown, the Meadowlands Million, the Travers, the Breeders Cup and the Jockey Club Gold Cup including three trips to Belmont and lose about $100 bucks a year. One year I made money. Hit on a $250 daily double. estory

Sounds like fun. I went to the local track with a group of ladies a couple of times. It was a fun outing.

I enjoy reading the piece about horse racing. your writing is very poetic like the following lines that actually rhymes:
Like the azaleas blooming bright in the early afternoon sun, and the sky blue and bright above the grandstand,

I have been to a horse race once in Fort Lauderdale, more than thirty years ago. I actually won, a beginner's luck. But I didn't continue, fortunately. I saw people who had been doing it for 50 years and they didn't look very healthy.

Well done.

Thanks for the excellent review and your interesting perspective on the story. What I really wanted to illustrate here is this experience of anticipation and disappointment, more than anything. I had fun at Belmont. We used to lose about $100 a year, going through the whole three year old campaign, with 3 trips to the track. The one time I hit the triple in the Preakness, it paid $50. Figures. They have a beautiful track in Hong Kong, I understand. Happy Valley. estory

A Parable of Horse Racing
Memories ch.13 A Day at the Race
estory With your exciting poetic voice, I felt I was actually present at horse race. I smiled when I read----

They round the clubhouse turn and bolt into the home stretch. Here they come, four horses abreast, charging passed the grandstand. The crowd, still on its feet, seems to leap into the air as the horses pass and flash under the wire.

Because I was a problem gambler, I have experienced so much of that when I was younger, it was something I needed deliverance from as a new Christian I can remember that surge of hope, the self deception of feeling "lucky" that's how I learnt the deceitfulness of the heart, but I know the feelings, the atmosphere and excitement of the racetrack, beautifully written, blessings Roy

Thanks so much for the excellent review. Yeah we had fun at the track, but it was a money losing proposition. We used to lose about $100 a year. A remember betting on this one horse, Turn Back the Alarm, and she won all her starts at Belmont. Undefeated. Until we put a $50 win bet on her and she finished out of the money. That was our last trip to Belmont. estory
