Insight is when you can produce established art forms and still sound poetic. You have the right kind of insight to be a great writer.

Thanks for the lesson.

Thanks for finding this one. It was a form I'd never seen before! I love that a number of poets on site soon posted their own "Golden Shovel" pieces!

Hi Karenina,
I'm amazed that you can write such a stunning piece, surely putting a smile on Emily's face, while still recuperating from your accident.
Thanks so much for teaching this (new-to-me) poetic form. I'm definitely going to try it very soon. I wrote the rules down, along with your poem as an example, and Emily's two lines you used.
Some lines that I enjoyed,
"A frozen spike of ice is hope" ... Wow! That tells me that hope doesn't end. It lasts and lasts. You never give up the fight. You stay positive.
I have to admit, though, I didn't understand "whispered gloom". I would have rather read,
on coldest nights there is
no whispered doom -
**********************************
I also liked this line,
"Our lives are winsome feathers
which blow this way and that!" ... reminds me of Forrest Gump's white feather. Our lives are so tossed at times.
************************************************
Another great line,
"Death is the bird that perches" ... reminds me of a line in a song by Peter Paul & Mary, called "The Garden Song".
"An old crow watchin' hungrily
from his perch in yonder tree"
Here's a link:
https://youtu.be/RHhRyjwYnX0
****************************************************
I hope there are angels who will help me find the flight path when I kick off.
Gotta look up that word now... "desultory"
Nicely penned! Thanks again for teaching this unique form of poetry.
Hugs,
Kimbob

What a lovely, intelligent , comprehensive review this is! I happened upon this form and was so pleased to try it, using some much beloved lines from my favorite poetess, Emily. I was pleased to see a fair amount of FS poets offer their own wonderful take on the form. I look forward to reading yours! I'm off to use your link to the Peter, Paul and Mary song. They were the music of my youth! I so appreciate your kind words!

    Many Thanks, Karenina

Spectacular poem. I'm sure Emily Dickinson would be proud. Your interpretation says so very much. It is well worded and lifts the spirit. A very clever and deep. I truly like your last lines about still having time to find the flight path for our souls.

Thank you so very much! Emily inspired me from the time I first read her poetry when I was eleven. This was a way to honor her work.

Karenina,

Well, fiddle. I have no idea how you posted this and I missed it entirely. Entirely! I am frustrated but at least glad you were recognized for the beauty here AND so that it came back around so folks like me got the chance to see it again. *smile*

I really like this piece and the post you chose to build it around. Thanks so much and congratulations!

Thanks Robyn! No worries...I'm positive there are many posts I should have caught and they somehow slipped by me. Thanks for the congrats. I'm fortunate, lucky, likely received a lot of sympathy reviews... That being said I will take the $25 member dollars--acknowledge there were plenty of poems more worthy and promise not to let my head swell! --

Hello Karenina,
You've woven your words around Emily's like the threads of a beautiful tapestry--cold and warmth, life and death, faith and doubt;
her familiar theme of death wrapped around her masterpiece of hope.
I'm not sure how random the wandering is,
it seems there is certainty, as if the checks were given,
for truth lights the way.
Six golden birds of hope.
Best wishes. Hope things are improving.
Robert

Hi Karenina,

Glad to see you posting again, and such an accomplished poem with a profound message. Death is indeed "the bird that perches!"

No getting around it, it looms over us all of our lives, but your last stanza is truly inspired for there is still hope,

" Death is the bird that perches;
there's time, then, when dug in-
to contemplate and strive to find the
flight path for our soul!"

Perfect! That's what we can do as we do our 'homework' and truthfully assess our path to take in life before the "winsome feathers" stop blowing about :))

Excellent writing and hope this is a sign you are doing much better, Karenina?
Praying for your continued recovery every day

Always,
Senyai

Thank you for this amazing, insightful, six star review! I am so pleased you sensed the bigger message here! Hope, alas! So nice to post again, with help from my daughter, typing. One more surgery pending...then (hope!)--I will be truly on the mend!

Ah, Karenina. One more surgery? So they deemed it necessary to fix their previous mistakes? Well, I pray they get it right this time around!

So glad for you that the doctors are going to get issues corrected and onto full recovery.

Praying for you, my dear Karenina ❤️

There you are! Beautiful poem.
I may try the golden shovel using this poem! I haven't heard of the style before.

I love these lines:

flight path for our soul!

Thanks friend! Never heard of this form,, but if it allowed me to use some of Emily's words as end words I was all in on trying it! Gloria has given it a whirl so far...hope others do, and you too! It's kind of fun once you commit to the lines of a poem! (Thanks for the sixer!)

This is so creative and unique Karenina. I have never heard of this poetic form before but you have cleverly created a lovely poem using one of my favorite poet's verse for your Golden Shovel.

You are most talented my friend.

Blessings
Janet

Thank you Janet! Emily is by far my favorite poet. I had not seen this form before but, of course, her work came to mind as I decided to try "The Golden Shovel." I appreciate your six stars and encouraging comments!

This is a well done metaphoric free verse about hope/like and death.
I like the artwork you chose to illustrate your words
