Wow, that was a close call, Jan! Events like these make us appreciate cell phones these days, even if they can become annoying when overused for things other than phone calls. Well written. I'm glad it all worked out.

Yes indeed, though my team association through sport in my long time career, I got to know many people, and still remember that close association and stories through these things, overcoming circumstance is a common thing in sport, and identifies with life. Beautifully written Jan, blessings Roy

Oh so true. Most of the school districts my boys played sports with, because my husband was military there were a lot, had rules that under no circumstances could a child NOT ride the bus home. It just wasn't allowed. Thank you for sharing.

Trust me, after this close call, I was not about to be in that position again. Normally I graded papers when we traveled, but I got them all done on the way over. Suppose I had my head down while she was running behind us. Ironically, her real name is the same as my mom's. jan

That poor girl. I can only imagine the panic and fear she had. We always wonder how we got by without cell phones, but if ever there was a need for a cell phone it would be situations like this. I'd hate to be the cousin that took the car! You took such care to make sure Eileen was safe before you got on the bus, I'm sure you did the glance out the back of the bus as one more check out of concern for her safety. You were definitely her guardian angel that night. I'll bet you have many former students through the years keep in touch especially now with Facebook. You've probably taught children of some of your former students. I'm sure that can make you feel old, but kind of cool that you're still doing what you love. Take care, Sally

Sally, the children of the children are not so bad; however seven years ago, one of the girls who gave me a fit almost every day asked me if I knew this particular woman. I smiled and said, "Sure. I taught her geometry when she transferred from JFK to FGH. She cussed me out a time or two." The girl said, "I can't wait to go home and tell my mom that her mom used to cuss my algebra teacher out." I should have resisted, but didn't and quipped, "Tell Sarah (the grandmother), like grandmother, like child." I never had any more trouble out of the girl because Sarah and I had a "Come to Jesus" meeting one day outside my room and then became good friends after she graduated from school. jan

So she was furious with her nephew I assume? Not with you, surely? Just as well it turned out okay for poor Eileen. Could have been very dangerous. You certainly had some experiences!

Yes, that's what happens when you are as old as dirt and are still teaching - LOL! The mom was furious with the nephew, for sure. jan

Captivating, skillfully narrated. Masterful build-up to surprise twist!

(Trust me, riding the equipment bus is not fun after a ball game with the heat running! I was happy it had been hours since we had eaten.)

Elizabeth: Ironically, Mastery pointed that out to me when I first began this book. I have tried numerous times to fix it - it looks fixed, I save it, and it still comes out chopped.
In terms of the equipment bus concern: that would include the boys' dirty uniforms, jock straps, socks, etc. which had been sweated in by 45+ high school boys who didn't all have the best hygiene in the first place. Just think of a small men's locker room with no windows with heat. Thanks for your suggestion

There's a character limit of 50 in the subtitle--if you use more it will get chopped.

What I didn't get was about having eaten hours earlier.

    Bad smells make me nauseous.

I kind of figured that was what you meant--just making sure--since food stays in the stomach between 40 and 120-plus minutes, your timeframe has you covered as far as not being something there to vomit after several hours!
reply by Elizabeth Emerald on 14-Aug-2021
As for the subtitle--try taking out the initial "A "--that will free up two spaces so you can get the R for career.

I also went back and used your suggestion in this chapter

The story is well written suitably fotmatted,
and the presentation is attractive
Schooldays play such an important role in our formative years.
Parents are assigned to transport duties for a good 17 to 20 years.
Good parenting never ends.

It happens. Some people can be inconsiderate, especially to their parents. Taking a parents' car by a child is too common, mostly because the child believes the parent will not press criminal charges against them. I've seen this, and I also seen fed up parent press charges and send their teen to jail.

Good story, glad you have eagle eyes.

Me, too! I cannot imagine the horror of getting back to school only to find she had been left behind, no matter whose fault it was. jan

Wow, what a close call, Jan. You presented this well. I could follow everything like I was right there in the midst of traveling and watching the game. I believe the PTAs of both schools did an awesome job providing dinner for the visiting team. I'm glad everything turned out well. I agree the cheerleaders need to ride home the same way they rode to the out of town game.
Thanks for sharing.
Respectfully, Jan

Trust me, after that, the parent had to come up to me and sign they were taking their daughter with them. No more close calls for me. jan
