I have five stars left, just so you know. I take it that you are giving advice that you follow, and it's all good. I would have added one more bit of advice: Write about a topic and in a form that inspires you.
I ran out of inspiration for fiction, so I switched to biography. Now I have more story ideas than I have time to develop them. Thank you for thoughtful essay about a subject that is seldom a topic on fanstory. We need more like it. Jeff

There are many things to learn on the way toward a writing goal. Some of the greatest writers known in America have had the pleasure of having their work, and some I knew personally, but all give this advice. Always build and outline; if not, the brain will become spaghetti.

Thank you for this essay on writing. I considered this to be mostly for new writers and since I'm an old one, I thought of lots you could add, but that's for another essay, another day. Your words are very encouraging and helpful to those who may feel uncertain about their work. I thought the most important thing you mentioned was passion. Without a passion for the work, there is little chance a writer will have the will to keep after it long enough to bring about the desired results. Like any craft, writing requires endless practice and training and self-discipline to make it as good as it needs to be. You have written a most encouraging piece here and I hope it will do well in the contest. MM

Writing is hard but it is important to practice like you have said. I think most people choose to write is because they have inner desire to do so. It is a labor of love for sure. Otherwise what's for? It is extremely hard to make a living, not even the best seller writers nowadays when everyone can be a published writer. I'm Chinese and English is my second language which doesn't stop me from publishing two books of fictions. I have won short story awards in Paris in 1992. I'm also an engineer and only took a few creative writing classes about thirty years ago. Writing makes me happy.
