This is interesting that it didn't even make sense to you, Jan. I had no clue what you were talking about throughout the story, since your schooling system is obviously much different to that of ours in Canada. That's not your problem. It was well written.

Judy, thanks for your review. For me, the bottom line should be that two students taking the same test on the same subject receiving the same score should either both pass or both fail. jan

As a retired educator and professor of education, I feel your pain in dealing with this. I am afraid our educational system is in a state of disaster for many reasons and Covid lock downs only made it worse. It is fortunate that your understand these differences but now, what to do? You see your writing was a good piece because it got me going about education again and I've been retired for five years! Good job! Go ruffle some feathers of the bigger birds in education.

Terry, I plan to. What are they going to do? Fire me? Pull my license which they just renewed for 10 years? They can't get enough math teachers as there is. I just believe we should do what's right for kids. jan

I couldn't agree more, why state education systems and curriculum don't all line up in educational, some subjects are considered "holier" than others, my poor wife felt that discrimination in teaching languages, the cultural things always suffer, when they are the foundation of a nation. But good on you for being compassionate, they need more of that. (Sorry for the ramble) Blessings Roy

I do understand. It seems so much is changing daily and for no reason. Nothing makes sense any longer in the field of education. Algebra 1 should have the same content in every state and the COVID rules should be the same, the entire country had it. GRRR Thank you for sharing.

As you say, the numbers don't compute--so much tumult in the wake of Corona--you've conveyed the confusion brilliantly. So frustrating to deal with arbitrary standards.

It's obvious to me that you care very deeply not only about the quality of your students' education, but also about their success, and the measures of fairness used by the system. I understand that one of your students missed the mark by only a few points, but I wasn't able to follow the other subtleties of the scoring system to fully understand the point you were trying to make. I don't know if it's just me, or if I've been away from academic environments for too long.

Mary Kay - My point is that the students who passed Algebra 1 in the state of VA were allowed a lower score than those who passed it in another state - it makes no sense to me -- jan

Being from Australia, I find your system so very different, and therefore had a bit of trouble with the details of this one. However I understood the overall confusion about the two girls from interstate. But these were not in your summer class, were they? Sorry, I guess everyone else will understand your system better. If they had been impacted by Covid, they would just need a score of 350, but otherwise 400 - is that right?

Actually, if they had taken Algebra 1 in VA, they would just need a score of 350, but since they passed it in a different state, they were held to a higher standard - insanity at its best - jan

It's a number game, Jan. Each district sets its goals without input from teachers. Your class got off to an early start. School starts here August 2. The testing seems early, too. Was it mainly to see where each student was and what their performance level was? You did a good job with this chapter.
Respectfully, Jan

No, we haven't started school yet. This was a special session for kids who had not passed the SOL for their courses which they need to get verified courses. Algebra 1 is a state-mandated verified course for all students to graduate. jan We don't start until 9/7/2021
