Boy, you sure couldn't do that today. Your cousins would have been taken by the police to DCFS and their parents arrested for child endangerment. We did a lot of things back in the day that would get our parents in trouble now. I swam in a few of those muddy ponds, until I saw Jaws! Thanks for the nostalgia! Best regards, Sally

I loved this story. Kids are really much smarter and capable of more independence than they are often given credit for. There really were days when kids could roam all over in small "gangs" and be safe. Sure, we had accidents and some broken bones, but that was seen as part of growing up. Now, we put kids in safety bubbles and thy participate in supervised and organized play. They are missing a lot. This reminded me of my youth and my brother who always hitchhiked home from college in the late sixties. He met some interesting people. However, one of my boyfriends was once picked up by someone looking to be paid back with "favors." He was a rugged guy and able to defend himself, but it really shook him up.

Thank you Susan for your review. I agree that kids now have play dates rather than creative free time to play.

Wow that is a lot ok kids hitchhiking at the same time. I had a period of time in my life for about a year that I hitchhiked around town while I was in college. The days were different back then. I enjoyed reading your semi true story lol.

Mary,

My, oh, my! It always scares me to death when I hear about all the kids who hitchhiked! But I suppose, in some areas, it must have been safer than others. IDK. It gives me the willies!

This was a fun story that made me smile. I could picture all of it! I laughed about being more bothered by the mud than the snapping turtles. hahaha

Some notes, if I may?
1.) "Well, what are you (two) sweet angels doing on the road(?)

2.) He had a catcher's mitt size hands
--> He had catcher's-mitt sized hands

Thanks so much!

I loved the story. Growing up in the country was fun and it is a shame everyone didn't have a chance to experience it. The swimming hole reminds me of the muddy cow pond I swam in as a child. I remember the feel of mud squished between my toes.

A great story from " the old days" when life was free and easy - and a lot safer. No-one would ever left such small children do that these days. Very well written. An enjoyable read. Well done.

This is a fun family memory, well told, Mary. It must have been great to have so many cousins close enough to hang around with. I can feel that mud between my toes too! Creative Non-fiction is another category that would be welcomed on this site, I think, because many of us have to be a little creative with our memories. Lol

I love your story. I remember as a child we had to walk about a mile to school and often people would stop and give us a ride, we did not have to stick out our thumb. Sometimes it was a car, other times the back of a wagon.

I love this story and felt nostalgia for a simpler and kinder time in history. I also love the ingenuity of these kids in order to have some fun cooling off. Really fun write.

I truly love your story, and enjoyed every word of it. Your childhood tribe sounds similar to mine, and I have so many fond memories of 'those times', but sometimes there are tiny holes in my memories too. Thank you for sharing this beautiful story - it brought a big smile this morning as I savored every word.
