Oh I do not envy you... First the agonizing sinus problem (I can relate) and then the decision to go or stay... and of course, how the students will react. You wrote this quite well and I am off to read part 2.

Smiles, Carol

Thanks, Carol. I ended up having surgery for a deviated septum not long after this deal. Thanks for reading. Jan

My wife taught languages, so rather than take the day off, and wrestle with lesson preparation she'd venture in be miserable all day battling miscreant kids and her illness all day, she's got a great character, I usually went to work when sick, a day off is meant to be enjoyed! Well done Jan, blessings Roy

I hate it when my class acted up for another teacher. I would come down on them so hard. LOL I can't wait to see what you did or what their story was. I think you've already posted it. Going to read now.

What naughty monsters! I can't wait to read what the outcome of your 'handling this' is like. I'm sorry you suffer so much with sinus, my husband used to a lot, but, touching wood as I write, he hasn't had one for quite a while now. You were a hero going into work like that. Well done, you deserve a meddal. :)) Sandra xx

Thanks for sharing another chapter in the life of a teacher, Jan. It's sad that your class misbehaved for Mr. Maury, but you should not have been at school in the condition you were. Looking forward to reading what your students had to say.

One thought: You started two sentenced in a row with the phrase, "As soon as." Maybe replace one with "when" or something similar.

The wrong thing for the substitute to say! It was really asking for trouble! It seems to have triggered them to gang up on him. Perhaps he would have been better to just laugh and say " Great prank, but we'd better get to work so your teacher isn't disappointed." It all depends on his relationship with them and his reputation. If he was a respected teacher they would probably have turned back and all had a good laugh together. Good story. A sub has to be ready for anything! Not an easy role.

Sad thing is he was a regular math teacher at the school. He just wasn't all that good with teens. jan

I read these bass-ackwards--no matter--I got the gist of the backstory thanks to your starting off the next with a recap from this--brilliant lead-in to why you had to go home sick--your misery is made manifest.

Dealing with rebellious students has to be extremely challenging. I've heard a lot of horror stories from teachers about it. But it's good to get the whole story. It'll be interesting to see the what the interaction between you and the students will be like.

I remember back in high school, kids were terrible to subs. Why they thought they didn't have to listen to the adult in the room I'll never know. I was the good student who sat in the front not the back. My daughter looked like she was as young as the students. She didn't get a teaching position her first year out of college do she did some long term maternity leave subbing in a middle school. She had to do bus duty and there were several girls goofing around. She told them to get on the bus. One girl said "You can't tell us what to do." She thought my daughter was another student. My daughter looked at her and said "I can and I did. Get on the bus before I send you to the Dean's office." The girl then noticed her ID and quickly said "sorry" and got on the bus, embarrassed. The next day she was in my daughter's English class. She was surprised, to say the least! I can't wait to read what happens. Sally

Sometimes children will play with a teacher. It's not always mean spirited. It depends on the students. We had a class of very bright students that pulled a similar trick on a teacher. They were all standing when she entered the classroom. The desks were already turned backwards when she entered but she couldn't see it because of the way they were standing. When she told the class to take their seats they all sat down with their backs to her. She laughed out loud. They all laughed and turned their seats around and class went on as usual. They played many such tricks with her but all in fun. Both class and teacher had grown extremely close by graduation. There were tears all around when it was time to say goodbye. Your story made me remember. Well done!

Brenda: It is all about relationship and not taking yourself too seriously but not allowing too much, either. It can be a fine, fine line. Thanks for sharing. jan
