This is a well written, powerful, and thought provoking story that leaves the reader dazed, not knowing how to feel. Alive, the patient would be bedridden in constant pain. What do you do? There is no right or wrong answer. This is how flash fiction is supposed to end. Best wishes in the contest.

This was an excellent yet unfortunate piece. I think many of us can relate to wanting to dull the pain of the loss of a loved one. Great work here, thanks for sharing. Later daze.

Hello J.P.Olesen,
Nice piece of General Flash Fiction meeting the desired norms, having lucid wording, captivating flow throughout from the beginning to the end, and transparently depicting its theme.
The last paragraph is particularly noteworthy.
BEST OF LUCK in the contest.

Spot-on @ 100 words. Compelling and thought-provoking--rings true to heartrending circumstances--my mother did same to my father--I wasn't OK with it--he was demented (AD), not in pain, had pneumonia, they declined treatment. Stunning and powerful.

This is truly a nightmare scenario, that many of us dread for the future. It's a heavy burden, and we can only hope to do what we think they'd want...and yet the guilt lingers. You did a beautiful job of telling this story of love, duty and anguish.

I'm sure such decisions plague many family members who have been in similar situations. I found this quite powerful and wish you good luck in the contest.

I don't blame the main character in this 100 word essay. I don't think we are equipped well enough to "play God", no matter whether we can justify it or not, so I can relate, I had to pray that God take my dad, he incapacitated from the neck down, and his life was not really worth living, but at least it was in God's hands, great entry, good luck, blessings Roy

Oh my... what a powerful story in 100 words. I took care of my parents and my husband who was terminal as well for ten years... It can take a toll on you if you let it. this generation (my children) say they don't believe they could give that much of themselves...(so I hope I die quickly) lol Definitely makes one stop and think about what is the right thing to do... I know I would not want to lie there in pain or as a vegetable... I almost wrote 100 words just tossing your story around me my head... Awesome! An excellent choice for the contest!!

Smiles, Carol

Wow, I hope this is pure fiction. However, it all sound all too familiar. In the northern Western world, this pattern of family washing their hands off their elders is all too familiar. Where I live, in southern Europe, old people are being looked after by the younger generation.
Your flash is very well writen. Good luck in the contest. Ulla:)))
