"Memories of this World ch. 11" definitely gives us the "joys of camping out". You list memories easy to share and enjoy. Love the way you mention playing cards. My camping is much the same except now in a motor van camper. It has more comforts than a tent, and no worry of bears when bedtime comes in AK. Enjoyed your story so much!

Thanks so much for the excellent review and for your comments supporting the story; I am glad it brought back some good memories for you. I really wanted to show how exciting life can be when we shake it up; go out on a limb, leave the conveniences of modern life behind. estory

Yes, your camping trip is a rejuvenation of sorts. We think of camping as rather primitive, but when you are surrounded by nature and feel the warm air and sniff the aroma of the pines, it is like a rebirth. Your composition is so well rendered and tugs at our eagerness to experience that, again.

You are so right about the beauty and comfort of camping. It's sad to know that not many young people will experience this these days. I remember going to Brownie and Girl Guide camps, and Church camps. I was also a Girl Guide leader in later years, and it was such a great bonding experience. Of course, we might have had TV at home, but there were no other electronics to distract us. This is very well written.

One spag: "as the shapes of trees and boulders grow(s) more indistinct," - remove the "s" because you are have two subjects,

Thanks so much for the excellent review and for your wonderful comments supporting the piece. I am glad it seems to have brought back all those memories of camping in your life. I think camping is making something of a comeback, due ot the pandemic. Everyone was so creeped out about spending time in the same room that other people shared, and now it is a matter of cost. Hotels are through the roof right now. Record sales for Winnebago and Coleman right now. estory

Thanks so much for the excellent review and for your wonderful comments supporting the piece. I really wanted to capture the sense that it is exciting to shake up life, go out on a limb, and leave the conveniences of modern living for a time in a simpler experience, out in touch with the natural world. estory

This work has reached the exceptional level

This was wonderful to read and reassuring that others like to outdoors as much as I do. This story brought back old fond memories of camping by the redwoods or in the desert...anywhere is a great place to camp, as long as it is outdoors with nature. Even setting up a tent in the backyard can be fun and was for me when I was a kid.
You wrote an exceptional essay about camping, and I applaud you, my friend.
Thank you for taking me back to days of fun and adventure.
Have a great upcoming week,
Jesse

I enjoyed your personal telling of this escape from the city and how it made you feel. Your descriptions put me right there and echoed my own feelings about camping, amidst "this raw, natural force".
The liberating stripping away of civilized living is certainly a cause for exhilaration, and ultimately contentment.
(Several years ago I hit the road and motorcycled throughout Australia with a friend, mostly camping out in a huge variety of landscapes.)

Thanks so much for the excellent review and for your perspective on the piece. I think there is something to getting away from it all, leaving the civilized world behind for adventure in the wilderness, in a simpler experience. I am glad the writing was able to make all that come alive for you. estory

Oh, this is beautiful! I love the descriptions of surroundings and the clear passion for camping, being away from much of civilization, etc. I agree that camping is special; we've done a lot of it, and some of those memories are the best.

I have one suggestion, if you are interested. I think the writing would be stronger if you took out the last sentence in each of the first three paragraphs. They are such "telling" statements that they almost feel disruptive to me after the beauty of the descriptions, which told me everything I need to know. For example, in the first paragraph, after talking about the mountains, the flow of rivers, the voice of nature, a raw natural force, etc., I get the feeling, and I love it! As a reader, I don't want to be told it is exciting.
I hope this makes sense. Good luck to you - -

Hi estory. Yes, I couldn't agree with you more. Camping out is a great experience. I was an adult when it came into my life, and I loved it. Your descriptions are so apt and spot on. To get to upstate New York is so easy and the big city is soon far behind.
I loved this piece. It's well written. Ulla:)))

Thanks so much for the excellent review and your support for the piece. I am glad that the writing was able to bring to life this experience and bring back some memories too. Yes, we were lucky to grow up near New York. One great thing about it was that in two hours, you could leave the big Apple behind and be in mountains and waterfalls. estory
