I enjoyed the dog stories in here very much! I think your track record with dogs only improved, after Kokomo. Adopting Cody was a good move, and I think you're right -- he was given a bum rap. It was a harrowing incident, with poor Connie, pinned on the couch by Kokomo. And what a surprise, that Kokomo was gentle with your father! Kokomo certainly was a capricious animal.

If that's a picture of Mitsy, she certainly was a cute dog. Certainly, she got lost by running away from her previous owners. And your daughter thought she was a rabbit, so funny!

A very funny line:
"we agreed to take him, since we had a large fenced yard containing no emus."

Thank you again Mary Kay. I'm so glad you enjoyed the pet stories and you are an angel to help me get them in shape. That dog is a dead ringer for Misty. I have some adorable pictures of her, but I didn't go looking.

You're very welcome, Beth. Is it Misty, or Mitsy? I kind of wondered if "Mitsy" was a typo, but it was repeated so many times, so I left it alone. If the dog's name was "Misty," you might want to go back and check all the times you used it -- because they all say "Mitsy." Anyway, it's a wonderful story, woof woof! Love, Mary Kay xoxo

You have certainly had a variety of pets in your life, Beth! If I had my way, I would have rescued many more too. Since my last cat had to be put down due to an untreatable illness, that was it for me. Jim liked her, but won't agree to any more cats or dogs! Well written and fun to read.

Thank you Judy. I really appreciate the review and comments. No matter how much they drive you nuts, it really hurts to say goodbye. I miss having pets but I don't like losing them.

Another good story. We had a Misty in our lives. She lived to be 14 and died on the back porch one night. You have had your share of getting to know dogs as well.

Thank you Chuck for another review with the the lovely stars attached. I loved the little Chihuahua but she did lead us on merry chases. She was little but she feared nothing other than thunder.

Another delightful saga of life with temperamental pets--rich in wry humor--a fine segue to last week's post--can't wait for part three, etc.

Thanks Liz. I'm so glad you liked it. It is fun to remember the way these animals had of making us crazy.

This was hilarious - not the stories so much but the way you told it was fabulous. I'm glad that Kokomo was a blessing to your dad even though he was a terror to everyone else. I liked the idea of Cody going on an emu hunt. Your family is so generous with taking care of other animals!

Thank you Helen. I'm glad this story made you laugh. Kokomo did give us quite a surprise with Dad. Our animal made our lives interesting.

Ha, I have been enjoying a game of Word play for some time. Emu comes up from time to time and I thought Australia was the only place for Emus. I wonder if yours and ours are different? Ours are large and can run quite fast a bird?? Or something else? Good chapter. Keep it coming. No spags.

Thank you for the reivew and comments. You all don't have the esclusive of the emus any more. They're the same bird and that did come from Australia but a lot of people are raising them in this country now. A hatchable egg goes for Ten dollars but emu chick can cost as much a $5000. Aparently the farmers in this country like them if they can afford them. Emu oil is qute the rage here. Mixed with some other stuff it sure works good on my authritic knees. Thanks for the review and especially the six stars.

You did a good job with part two, Beth. I enjoyed reading it. Your experiences with pets--esp dogs is at time funny, but serious most of the time. Cody sounded like a fun dog and acted like a dog. I'm glad that you found him a home rather than, well you know. The other dog were well characterized as to how they affected your family. It was amazing about you dad and Kokomo. I will look up part one asap.
Thanks for sharing.
Respectfully, Jan

This disappeared before I got through saying Thank you, I wanted to say, I don't think I made it clear about Cody. He always came back home when he satisfied his taste for adventure. We didn't find him a home. He was with us till he died.

Yes, we have similar stories surrounding both cats and dogs, they are as varied in nature as they are in looks, same with any pet owners experience I would imagine! Thanks for sharing your wonderful anecdotes Beth, most enjoyable, well done blessings Roy

Beth, I have no idea what happened to the review I gave you. I was impressed by your chapter and commented that your writing had a way of inviting the reader into your family. I did comment that you never did explain what the final outcome was for Cody, only that you didn't much care to find him. Anyway, when I completed the review I checked to see if I had a six. I did so I clicked it and punched save. I got the message that I had no more sixes, but that was only after it took me to the next screen (out of the reviews and your story). I checked your reviews, and as I feared, mine was not one of them. So ... FS goofed. You should have gotten my last six.

Thank you Jay, I'm thrilled that you tried to give me a six. Sometimes my reviews disappear to. I assume I forget to hit save but I always think I did. I guess I didn't make it clear about Cody. Someone else mentioned wondering what happened to him. The sentence before we went chasing him said he always came back home but not before we wore ourselves out looking. He always returned at his own leasure but we we were afraid he would get run over or picked up by the pound. I apprecate the lovely review and the virtual six/

Phew... I did need a rest towards the end of your tale. Mitsy being a 'runner' had me wheezing. I enjoyed your touches of humour here and there. Dogs will always find mischief; you certainly had some challenges with your dogs' behaviour. Being aggressive at home is a worry, but what a delight that the bond formed between your father and Kokomo.

A well told, entertaining story.

(I am intrigued by mention of an emu - was it being kept as a pet in America?)

Thank you so much for the review and nice comments. I understand quite a few farmers keep emus. These people had two of them. They are quite expensive not being native to this country. I'm not sure if they were pets or the novelty of something not everyone has. I doubt if they were fror meat or the oil but a lot of cosmetics and medicines are made with emu oil.

I get concerned about introduced animals -they can escape and become pests. As an Aussie I feel for the poor emus living so far from home.

There are a lot of Emu being raised in this country now. Farmers also like Alpacos which are natices of Peru. So far, I don't think anyone is raising kangaroos.
reply by LisaMay on 05-Jul-2021
haha.... they'd need VERY high fences.

I'm shocked that emu-farming happens in America - I thought Australia banned export of them in the 1960s. Things must have changed. They are the Australian national bird. It would be like Aussies farming bald eagles.
reply by the author on 05-Jul-2021
Maybe there was enough of them here by that time that the farmers were raising them. They probably aren't still exporting them. I know you can buy the eggs that surposed to be fertile and hatch you own. I don't think it is a good idea.

I just did a bit of googling and the original stock were from US zoos. Emu meat was supposed to be the next big thing but the public didn't have wide acceptance.
i just feel sorry for them because in the wild their range is extensive, so I imagine being shut up in a small field would drive them nuts. Maybe they adjust OK. I wouldn't want to hatch my own emu - they can be very vicious attacking birds.
