Such a lovely tribute to your grandmother. She sounds like such a warm and caring person. Times are gone when family life revolved around the kitchen, but I still miss them.

I cook very little since I live alone. When I do, I cook a whole week's worth. Thanks, Sally. I hope you and yours are staying safe.

Great tribute to your maternal grandmother. But she sounds so much like my mother too. Reading this poem reminds me of my own mother who passed away near the kitchen too, Thanks for sharing a beautiful poem, Kit

Hello Sal.

Your free verse poem is written with excellent style. and I appreciate the recount of your maternal grandmother. She sounds familiar to me because I had a maternal grandmother I wrote about a couple of years ago. They were quite similar except for the basket of kittens. Your poem reminded me of my grandmother.

Good luck in the contest period

This is profound, Sally. I knew about your wonderful mother, but this may be the first I've heard about your amazing grandmother. It's hard to imagine spending all your productive years in one room! And much of that time, she was obviously pregnant, nursing or caring for small children. And the kittens ... aww! Most people don't get pregnant so much, these days, and certainly don't lose so many babies... scorching fingers, ouch! So hard to imagine. (My grandmother's sister lost a finger, because her fiance walked into the factory where she was working, she got distracted, and, thwack!)
So, everything happened in the kitchen (well, almost everything, wink, wink).
Even an aneurysm, in the kitchen ... it's surprising that doctors could recognize that, for what it was, going so far back. People still have aneurysms today, but we have preventive measures that make such events less likely, and living in the kitchen probably didn't do anything to help prolong her life... although it's the life she knew, which she lived for the ones she loved. May she rest in peace!

You're very welcome, dear Sal. Yes, I'm happy to know you better through this poem about your incredible grandmother! Come to think of it, my sweet Grandma (especially on my mother's side) spent a lot of time in the kitchen, but your story takes it to another level. Very touching, indeed. God bless you, dear friend. Love, Mary Kay xoxo

This is a beautiful poem about a resolute woman in a time gone by. I actually thought it was about "hired help." Your notes were a delightful addition. Times were certainly different then, but people were comfortable in their roles. She must have put out some delicious food!

It sounds like a life of drudgery to me but if it was her dream and she wore contentment like a glove that it was indeed a life well lives. This is wonderful poem your wrote about her.

What a beautiful poem about your grandmother. I think many made the kitchen their main room in their house. I know they had old cook stoves which they heated water on and also put in slabs of wood to heat their house with.....

Thank you for lovely review. My mother was born in 1922, so yes, the wood fire stove. No electricity in the house until much later. Outhouse right off the kitchen, and a metal bathtub hauled in the kitchen on Saturday for bathing. Farm life in Pennsylvania.

I can't help but imagine that during that time frame many women spent at least the majority of time in the kitchen. Women in today's world have it so easy with all the modern conveniences. I still make most things from scratch but do use modern conveniences that shortens the required time. Thank you for sharing this contest entry with us and good luck.
