Down In The Kitchen
Sally Law your lovely free verse poem, I see that you are honoring your maternal grandmother. I like how you are telling us most of her time was spent in the kitchen and
was the place of her dreams

This is an outstanding tribute to your maternal grandmother who gladly devoted her life to caring for her growing family, mostly through her unending tasks in a kitchen well before the modern conveniences which can lessen the time and effort she felt it her role to expend. As the cowboys in old films wished for themselves, she "died with her boots on" in the kitchen she loved after a life well lived.
From what you have told us about June, your mom, it is evident that your own lovely personality is easily traceable to such ancestors and the examples they set.
Superb, and aptly illustrated.

You are most welcome, Sal. From what you said, it is evident that your grandmother did not consider her efforts in the kitchen to be "chores" or even work. It was all a joyous "labor of love" to her. Those who are devoted to serving others are the happiest people. I'm glad to have read this post. :)) -- Mike

I am breathless. This is one of your single-most brilliant works. You have captured the setting perfectly. Your craft of imagery brings the writer right to the kitchen in a chair observing. This is clearly A+ work.

When I was a young boy, women cooked and cleaned from daylight to dark. And then, it was time again to clean up the supper dishes and pans and put away what was left. They worked harder and longer than anyone. Thanks for sharing.

Loved your poem, Sally! There's something so special about the kitchen. I think it's the place where memories are made. It's the heart of the home where love is served as shown by your hardworking grandmother. Best wishes in the contest!

This is a great tribute to your maternal grandmother, Sally. I enjoyed reading your contest entry. You portrayed her as a hard working woman who put family first--even over her own desires. I could see her cooking and caring for her family and the little kittens. She passed as she lived--serving others.
Best wishes.
Respectfully, Jan

Wow, Robyn, your free verse is so poignant and descriptive. I enjoyed the personal notes that helped me to understand her better and see what type of life she had. Great job on this one.

What a beautiful tribute to your grandmother. Women of today think they have it hard, but they truly have no idea. Your grandmother felt like it was her calling to care and feed the family and that's where she found her comfort. Awesome!
