I delighted in getting to know your grandmother and Aunt Tangie. Their personalities certainly collided in an amusing way (for the reader, that is). The dialogue is effective in showing how the two locked horns. I especially enjoyed the ending. Well done!

Unwavering truth to oneself and one's principles is rare these days and refreshing - but darned inconvenient at times, as your tale demonstrates! I like the characterisation in this and was left with a strong visual picture of your grandmother and Aunt Tangie.

Very interesting story and a delight that Grandma stuck to the truth. There had to be some way to silence Aunt Tangie. You have your paragraphs divided correctly but should divide all your paragraphs from each other with with a blank line.

Nana told it like it is. I agree the officer could have given a pass. It wasn't like Nana was a terrorist, but the law is the law. With some editing, the story was good and entertaining.

Hi dear Mary,
Quite an intriguing and provocative adventure trip into Canada; and
life lesson on 'truth and consequences' of it thereof...sometimes.
Your grandmother and Aunt Tangie; equally paired in provocation
and vindication...each in their own way. Thanks for sharing dear.

Best always, Ronni

You had an amusing and interesting story to tell. Your ability to clearly describe the personalities was excellent. I would have enjoyed a little more creativity at the close. Even a simple "that's Grandma!" would have been nice.

The tale of the stubborn grandmother who refuses to lie, even if it will make the crossing easier, comes across pretty well here. I like the description of the border guard with his flashlight peering at the faces in the car, with that stone faced expression. You raise the tension there. And then of course grandmother cannot say she is born in Massachussetts, and that sends her back to Canada and she has to be rescued. Much to everyone else's consternation. But it is a great story of convictions, and sticking to them, as a matter of point. estory

This is a great story. It sounds as if your grandmother was a proud and determined woman, who had a great sense of ethics. Aunt Tangie, while maybe unwilling to be quite as truthful, must have inherited some of her mother determination and stubbornness. I assume the picture is of your grandmother. This story was fun to read.

Thank you Beth. Good point about them being cut from the same cloth as far as stubbornness.

Bravo for your grandmother!! But I have a question - if she didn't lie, and without papers, how did she get back into the US? Apparently the truth did eventually set her free. She looks like a strong lady.
This is an interesting story and you told it well.
Congratulations for being recognized.

Thank you Katherine for your kind thoughts and review. My Nana was living in the US on a permanent Visa. They had to get hold of immigration to send her paperwork. Under this every few years she had to go to immigration to continue her status.
