I remembered the Kingston Trio singing a song called 'They Call the Wind Maria' back in 1963 when i was learning to play guitar. It is still around, which is more than can be said for my guitar playing, and can be heard on the YouTube at:

Your poem makes an interesting companion to it.

This is a well done rhymed poem that reminds us of the importance of wind. Most of the time it is good, except when it becomes tornados and hurricanes or straight line winds.
Good luck, keep writing and stay healthy

I really like this very much. It almost sings. I wonder if you could improve by saying sailboats "stall," thus endowing the wind with more "drive." The line about the poles surprised me. The poles ARE frozen. Did you mean to write "wouldn't"? All in all a very nice poem about the wind. I always loved the song about Mariah.

You are right...both the North and South poles are very icy, snowy and cold, but the are still habitable by humans. Once the wind stops however, the equator would stop shedding it's heat, and both poles would freeze solid. Any life on them would die and nothing and no one would survive. I sound like a science nerd, but I actually looked it up. :) Thanks again for this terrific review. :)

This is really good. I love the waving grasses(?), not wheat - whatever it is, is a great effect.
Your poem gives the positives of wind - its purposes, AND its name, Mariah - have always loved it, since I first heard that song.
very nice!

This is a great poem about Nature's Breath. Most of us have heard the phrase, "And they call the wind Mariah." I believe they might be words from a long-ago cowboy song. Good luck with the contest. I think it could be a winner.

Such a lovely poem and captured the prompt very well.

I especially loved the second to last stanza:

Without the wind seas wouldn't move,
the warm moist airy breeze
wouldn't spread and lakes would dry,
and the earth's two poles would freeze.

I admire poets a lot because of the way you can arrange words to rhyme, without losing their meaning.

Thanks for sharing.

Ah yes, I remember the wind called Mariah in a song. The wind of any name, is an independent element. It chooses its own course. It will blow up or down, whichever which way. Thanks for sharing. Success and joy to you.

Don't you like the way "wind" is the noun for gusts of air, and "wind" is the verb for twirling and twist tightly? Take care. Cheers

I prefer a gentle breeze, but often the winds in the Canaries and blustery and cause havoc! This time of year in the UK the breeze is gentle and I often wondered why they call the wind Mariah too, great rhymes here, love Dolly x

This poem is sweet and true. The wind is important. I like it at times especially when its warm. Not so much when it's cold. The chill goes right threw you. Thank you for sharing. Wish you luck.
