I'm come to the conclusion that when dealing with people (most idiots) a secret isn't a secret if you tell ANYONE. And if you want it to be told even faster, just add "And please don't tell anyone." Thanks for sharing.

    You nailed it!

She just blurted it out, not intending to be mean. Chuck, on the other hand, was snarky (fortunately, Emily didn't pick up on it).

I'd say that Emily isn't the most tactful person around. If one wants things kept from the world, they should know the nature of the people they share their secrets with. Not a topic of conversation for a pleasant meal.

Emily's weight loss seems to have included her brain. What a thoughtless blurt, or a malicious barb. Lucky you stopped racing when you did - it obviously gives people cancer and weightloss problems.
(Do you miss it?)

I hate running per se; nonetheless, I miss the sense of accomplishment, and the kudos for being fast for my age.

A bit of foot-in-mouth disease it appears and hopefully a lot of regret too. She'd been through difficult times and he had too...maybe in her mind she was commiserating with him?!?! You have to watch those guys named "Chuck" ...ask me I know... sort of like those you talk about called "Dick" lol

have a great day! Smiles, Carol

I don't know why I felt a bit sad reading your story. A voice keeps on telling me not to take my health for granted and not to engage in some heroic acts which are not up to my avenue! When someone has lost weight, they will feel changes from within and it is not limited only to the scale. I lost my elder sister in the 90s due to cancer and I have seen her losing weight on daily basis and turned into a skeleton in a span of three months. Mercifully she didn't suffer for long. It will be challenging for the affected persons to stay determined and lead a normal life. Thanks for sharing.

Nice bit of subtlety there! I have to laugh...

great write on a tough topic!

Being a two time breast cancer survivor I heard it all...

"Thank goodness it's just a breast! Could have been something important!"

(yeah...cancer/surgery/radiation/chemo is no walk in the park regardless of body part(s) affected.)

And...

"Well, at least you've lived to the ripe old age of fifty!)

Yeah...not so ripe...not so old...(thanks for cheering me up!)

And...

(post surgery number one)

" Oh my God! He carved you like a turkey breast!"

(um....thanks? Pass the cranberry sauce?)

And...finally, upon learning breast cancer made an encore appearance and I had to face it all again...

"Wow. You must have really fuc#%d up huh? To get it again?"

Some were kind but inept... Cancer is a hard topic, I get it...

Some were tactless, rude, cold individuals who ought to have known better.

Helpful hint?

The best revenge is to fight it and survive!

(That way they bought that black dress for NOTHING!)

Oh dear, a total lack of discretion!! And not a question one wants to be asked in any case. One would have thought she would have more tact ...
People can be so insensitive, even unintentionally. But Joe did say he hadn't told anyone ... guess he won't tell her anything else he doesn't want the world to know.

I can't believe anyone would be so uncaring as to make a cruel remark like she did. What was she thinking? What kind of racing are you an enthusiast for, horses or mechanical. Damn, I keep going back to that last remark. Does Emily dislike Joe? I've gone through cancer treatment several times, and I know what Joe needed was support, not cynicism. I'm sorry for my outburst.

Oh no! Why would she put it in those terms? Poor Joe! Pancreatic cancer is very hard to survive. One of my friends was called early to Heaven while only in her 40s.
Enjoyed your sharing the conversations which show me that you are back to regular socializing.

Wow, how insensitive was that comment! I'm appalled. I know from experience--my mother had pancreatic cancer. You did a great job, Liz, as always. I will say a prayer for your friend and one for your fiend.
Thanks for sharing.
Respectfully, Jan
