This two-hundred-word story, Not Just a Hat, has the required word count and reminds all those who understand, and those who don't understand why th3 hat has special meaning.

Nice story, it's important to stand for something and also to stand up to people who make fun of or belittle that. You express that very nicely here. Thanks for sharing this and have a great day

When I read your original piece it brought tears to my eyes. I spent 30 years as an advocate for veterans and appreciated reading your necessary post. I know this is an author withheld contest, but because of the subject, I recall the author of the original piece. Thanks for the longer version and best wishes in the contest.

I personally can't imagine why anyone would wear a veteran's hat who never served. It surely says a lot about the character he doesn't have. Thanks for your service and, for sharing your story. Wish I had a six.

First off THANK YOU FOR YOUR SERVICE!

Your story is very enlightening of why you wear your hat and represent why we have the freedoms we do because of the sacrifices made.

I have a son currently serving in the Navy.

What if others wear a hat that wasn't necessarily theirs, but in memory of a loved one that they may have served ... just a thought.

I would have been cool with wearing it honor of a loved one. Thank you for your son's service. I appreciate you taking the time to read and review my story.

The man's comment about it being just a hat was indeed callous and thoughtless. But then, the world is full of callous, thoughtless people.
I understand why you would take it personally.
I make no excuses for the man, merely not that millions of people wear New York Yankees hats but wouldn't know a slider from a four-seamer.
Many of those people are Yankees fans. Could it be that this man was showing his respect for the armed services? Probably not.
Best not to let it bother you.
I sincerely thank you for your service. Wear your hat proudly.

Best of luck at the polls.

Peace, Lee

That was awful! I can understand how you would be angry and hurt. You just have to think of all those soldiers, male and female who give up their lives to protect their country and all who want to live free from harm. This is short, but my word, it packed a punch. Well done and good luck in the contest. :) Sandra xx

This work has reached the exceptional level

It's easy for some who have never been in the service to flippantly say, "It's just a hat." My brother served in Vietnam. My father in Europe during WWII. My husband served during the Vietnam era also. Our son served in the Army in Iraq, three tours of a year each in Intelligence. He watched his building be blown apart as he came back from eating. Two minutes later he would have been done for. Then he had survivor's guilt because his two best friends that worked side by side with were killed in that attack. Yeh, it's just a hat. Tell that to a soldier's widow. Wonderful job!
I hope you win because of the sentiment but also because you told it straight up! God bless. And I do thank you for your service.
Patty

The symbolic hat here means everything to you, but not to everyone, and the guy secretly had admiration for the vets or why else would he wear the hat, much enjoyed, love Dolly x

Powerful piece. I recall your recent post on this theme cast in free verse. Heads up: Given that the wording is very similar, this would likely be disqualified. That said, this is compelling and skillfully written.
