This piece raises a thought provoking issue, highlighting the cultural insensitivities that exist, often unbeknownst to the individual who expresses such insensitivity.

A good piece for the contest.

It is said we fear that which we don't understand, and that fear gets turned into hostility. I'm not sure I buy any of that, exempt that racism is often driven by fear. Ignorance of other cultures is one thing. Hatred is another. People fear what they perceive as threats. I don't understand why eating bear meat should threaten anyone--but the bears.
Violent racists are those who are afraid they'll lose position or status if they down keep other people down. But you know that.
Every time it appears we're making progress with race relations, some idiot stokes the fires anew.

Well written.

Best of luck. Peace, Lee

The world is full of hatred and anger, is it not time to stop and listen to each other and to the voice of nature.--Do you mean it is 'now' time , , ,?

Alie,

I strongly agree with all that you've said here. Though, honestly, I may be one of the ones who growled bout some of your food choices! hahaha We are all so different - I know people up North can't IMAGINE eating okra, but it's a staple (and treasure) here. People instinctively curl their noses at things they don't understand. If I ever did that, I hope you know I was talking about the idea of eating things that were so foreign, and not saying anything about you or your heritage. Forgive me!

Notes:
1.) I have met many people who have said those things and I wonder how society allows such ignorance or in some cases stupidity.
--> This confused me. It seems to refer back to the lines stated in the previous paragraph - that we all bleed the same but are different and unique individuals. Is that the part you think is stupid and ignorant? Confused.
OR - are you referring to what people say about the things you eat? Might need to make it clearer?

2.) Please double-check the contest requirements. I think you are supposed to be describing one particular individual in a group of people and not relating memories. Not sure. Worth checking.

Thanks and good luck!

Thank you so much Robyn for reading, reviewing and your great comments. I will correct those things in a moment. By the way, lol, I love okra and grits, you are right okra is truly a southern thing but grits are like cream of wheat which I liked with butter and salt/pepper.

Yes it is time to listen to the voice of others and the voice of nature. To accept one another with our differences would be utopia. We have too much hatred, too much judgement, too much selfishness. I love your poem and cute illustration which really sets the stage. Perfect!

This work has reached the exceptional level

It's funny how young children don't see the color of their skin or any deficiency in others. But as we grow older and hear the hatred that's passed down through many generations, our mind begins to fill. What a wonderfully written piece.

Good luck in the contest!
Have a great day, and God bless.
