Erika--congratulations on your well-deserved prize for this heartbreaking/warming stunner. Glad I caught up to it--missed the release. Wonderful ending! Cheers. LIZ

This is a very moving tribute to you for saving him and Finnegan for accepting your help. My male goat was always healthy and loved, but his favorite occupation was to push me backwards onto the electric fence and then stand on me.

Oh my! That?s why I prefer sheep. I had a bottle-fed goat who, once he grew up, would come to the back door, stand on his hind legs, and knock with his front hooves. You didn?t dare open the door or he?d squeeze his way into the house. If you tried to ask him to leave, he?d use his horns to tell you no. It was hilariously awful. Ha! But Finnegan is a gentle sweetheart. Thanks for reading!

Like every living creature, Finnegan just needed love and care and caring. Being an animal lover, I'm so glad he found all that with you.
Each stanza in your poem provides such graphic imagery (tattered wool; uncertain of fate; dull desperation). So well expressed!

And they say, 'man is superior to animals' BS. This is a very poignant story. Thank you for your kindness. You are an animal whisperer. He knows he's loved.

Thank you for reading about my Finnegan. He was in a flock with about 25 other neglected sheep. I brought them all home, and my husband was like, holy crap, that's a lot of sheep. So we nursed them all back to health and found other homes for half of them. I let my kids name a a few of them, so they have names like Muffin, Unicorn, and Marshmallow... hahaha.

How sweet! I love to hear stories of neglected animals being rescued. We have two rescue cats and our son adopted a shelter dog during the pandemic. They drove him all the way froma shelter in Kentucky to Massachusetts! So glad Finnegan as a nice home now.

Animals know so well when they have been rescued and taken to safety to share a bond between human and themselves. They have a bond that is given freely. We as humans should learn from them. Thank you for rescuing this cutie and sharing it with us. Smiles, Carol

Finnegan is the name of my daughter's dog as well! He was a rescue...bone thin and flinching at every gentle approach. It is heart wrenching what so many animals go through! The photo is precious, the poem is life affirming. There are still kind humans in this world... One of them just wrote this poem!-- He IS a sweetheart!--Karenina

What a lovely story. And a great photo. He looks so sweet. He loves you very much, and you're like an angel to him by rescuing him from such a horrid life. Bless your heart. Good luck in the contest

Oh, just look at that face! He's a handsome boy :)
I loved reading your poem about Finnegan. The format is great and I really like how the end words in stanzas 1&2 rhyme, and again in stanzas 3&4.
Thanks for sharing and good luck in the contest.
Best wishes, Debra

This is blank verse, right? I am no good at free verse or blank verse. I love this though, and I wish I knew how to write like that. Animals are so special, and unless you have experienced it, people cannot understand the bond we can form with them. Give Finnegan a head scratch from me, please. Hugs and blessings to you.

I don't know what kind of poem this is. Does blank verse have rhymes? I just put down whatever comes in my head and don't really pay attention to rules.
