Dear writer,
I waited for someone else to say certain bugs don't bite me, while they feast on other people. I'm on some medication for pain and depression, and someone told me the flying bugs don't like the taste of some meds in the bloodstream.
You've written a nice 75 word story. It's clear and compact like the genre requires.
I like the subtle humor in the last line.
Excellent work.
Best wishes in the contest.
Cindy

thank you Cindy, for your kind comments and good wishes.
I'm so sorry you have pain and depression. Looks like your dog keeps you company, though, which is nice.
As you said about your medications, maybe it's some of the pills I have to take that the mosquitos don't like. Hadn't thought of that.
Thanks again and get well soon.

Hi Katharine.

Ants have an advantage when they are preparing to attack. They are quiet. Mosquitoes are not smart. They buzz and whine as they fly around so everyone knows they are coming.

You need to teach your ants to eat mosquitoes and leave you alone. I like rhubarb pie. :)))

brilliant and funny, but don't speak "ant."
You're asking a southern gal for rhubarb? I've never even seen rhubarb. You wouldn't perhaps like anything else? peach, apple, blueberry, chocolate, pumpkin, custard???
reply by Robert Zimmerman on 16-May-2021
I made up a sign to set against my chair when I'm out in the yard. The sign says "no biting." Ants and mosquitoes can't read either. Now I'm trying to convince birds to move into the yard and eat all of them.

I grew up in coal mining country along the Ohio River. Rhubarb grew wild there. Not much else would grow. My grandma used to make rhubarb pie. I haven't had any of that in well over 50 years.

Blueberry or cherry pie would be great. I don't like cake but I love pie.

Z - Has your wife never made you one?
Is there a bakery near you?
You'd get it quicker than if I made good on my offer.

    Hey K.

No sweat. I can bake pies. I entered one in a contest a few years ago. A local grocery store has 6" cherry pies for .50 each. That's where I get my pies. HAHAHA
reply by the author on 16-May-2021
Well, good for you. that's great.
guess they don't make rhubarb ones. Are the 50 cent pies regular size?

    regular sized ones??
reply by Robert Zimmerman on 16-May-2021
The pies are 6" which is pretty good for .50 and they are tasty.

I probably would choose ants! They can be avoided for the most part. Mosquitoes arrive as soon as the light goes out, and if you turn the light back on to catch them - of course they are hiding! So annoying with their little humming sound. Well written story.

Thanks, Wendy, for reading and for your comments.
one responder said mosquitos were dumb - advertising their arrival with all that buzzing, that ants at least were quiet.
Hmmm. Noise is not a factor for me. I dislike mosquitos. I detest ants. They have really long-lasting venom.

Really! I don't think I'd like an ant bite. With mosquitoes, you can decide not to scratch. The best solution here is to get rid of the beasts, once and for all. Someone should think of a miracle spray that doesn't affect humans.

I'd say either an ant or a mosquito is a pest is a pest is a pest. I don't think you should take it personally if the mosquitoes (my spelling choice, but your is accepted spelling too) don't like you. They don't like anyone. It's hard to keep from scratching when you get a bite. You can't interest me in taking either of them. Enjoyable story, and best of luck in the contest. judi

don't blame you. don't want 'em either. Believe me, I'm delighted mosquitos don't like me, though I am curious why.
thanks for reading and for the good wishes.

Well Katherine,
I hate them both. When I lived in Charleston South Carolina years ago while I was stationed there, I used to buy crickets for bait. The ones I didn't use, I left outside on the back stoop. By morning there would be a steady stream of fire ants going to the cricket basket and back to the nest. I hate bugs of any kind. We don't have ants that I know if here, but we do have mosquitos and they start early. Thanks so much for making me itch!
Oh, maybe you could buy an ant eater and keep him at your house. Have a bug free day gal.

sorry, Tom. Didn't mean to make you itch. (though am smiling)
where in the world are you with no ants???? I'll have to check your bio. again.
I love Charleston. I'm originally from Augusta, Ga, so you'd think I'd be used to the little critters.
    Thanks for 4. sniff.

Katherine, I've done it again. I don't what is wrong with the computer or me or what the hell is happening. I gave a four to Mrs. K T the other day too without meaning to. I must be dense not to check the rating before I hit the send button. I'm sorry, I'll correct it. In any event, I'm in Alaska, in Wasilla. We moved north from our home for 44 years down in Southeast Alaska. There were carpenter ants there, but few others. It might have been too wet. Here I guess it's too cold, which in the case of ants is a good thing. Unfortunately though the mosquitos are prolific all the way up to the Artic. That's why there are so many nesting birds up on the tundra, they can get fat and happy on bug larva. The bad part is that they can't eat enough and they literally drive the herds of caribou mad.

I forgot that's where you are. brrrr, however here in summer is horrid.
thanks for changing the "fo." happy weekend.

was in a hurry when I answered you before. sorry. That's sad about the caribou.
We are still thankfully cool, but any minute now we can turn hot and real summer is almost unbearable.
How did you like Charleston when you were there/
reply by T B Botts on 16-May-2021
I liked some aspects of it. We lived downriver from the paper mill on the Cooper River, and every morning there would be a cloud hanging over the river and the stench was foul. We lived across the street from the navy base in a bungalo. It was big, and busy, but I used to go fishing at the Naval Weapons Station ponds or with my neighbor at Quimby Creek or at at the lake at Goose Creek. I liked that a lot, but where we were living was dangerous. We lived in North Charleston and one night someone tried to break in while our car was in the shop, and another time someone up the street was murdered, so I guess going back was out of the question, especially once I saw Alaska.
reply by the author on 16-May-2021
oooo, don't blame you. that sounds awful - especially compared to fresh, clean Alaska.
I like Texas and, on the whole, most Texans.

Hmmm! I think I will pass. You might serve grasshopper pie. Your contest entry is in good form, Pome Lover. I enjoyed reading it. I like the idea of a trade, but not with the items, LOL. Best wishes.
Thanks for sharing.

Lol. I remember Houston mosquitoes - boy, they made it impossible to work in the yard. But comparing mosquitoes to fire ants, I'd prefer them skeeters, too. So glad you don't get bothered by the mosquitoes. I think it's too cold around here for the mozzies, and these northern ones are too slow. Sorry, can't trade.

    okayyy, no pie for you!
but - thanks for reading and I think it's funny that your Northern skeeters are slow - usually it's us slow-movin' southerners.

The thought of pie was tempting, but I've found an awesome bug spray for the yard and Home Defense for the doorways and ants, so I think I will pass. Sorry... hope you find someone to bite (oops) on your offer. Smiles, Carol

    hahaha - funny gal.
so, "Home Defense" is the name of the ant killer? wonder if it's poisonous to dogs if it gets on their feet.
so far I'm not getting any takers on this swap business.
anyway, thanks, Carol, for reading and commenting.

I've never had any problem with my dogs...but I heard the Avon's skin so soft will do the trick too. Extra bonus, sweet smelling little feet. LOL

But I did like your story. I bet my review is longer than your piece!
