Oh the childhood memories this brought back of growing up in the rural West Tennessee hills. If I had been born a cat I would have died before I was ten. Just celebrated my 81st birthday in the one room school house where my formal education began. Several that grew up with me were asked to give stories they remembered about me. Uh-oh the secrets came out. Back in those days not many had transportation and since it was fertile farm land if the did it was a pick-em-up truck. Well out came a picture for evidence. A fine looking farm boy was out driving and picked up some dressed up three chicks out walking. Well, it was flooding time and that Tennessee River was spilling over. So off we rode to see rivah. All was pretty fine 'til we headed back before any of us teenagers was missed. Somehow Thomas flipped the truck. I was seated next to him -- no seat belts back then. Our shoulders were not social distancing. I got a broken collar bone. Lots of pain. Yet back in those days when we misbehaved we got our butt whooped. So I kept my mouth shut. For about two days. You know for my 81st birthday, Thomas was still bragging what a fine truck that was. How dareth him!

Thank you for the wonderful and fun review plus the six shiny stars.
I enjoyed reading about your adventures growing up in rural West Tennessee. Sounds like it was a great childhood. One of my classmates is putting together a series stories from our home town in northwestern Pennsylvania. This is the 3rd story I've written and sent to her for the book. But reading about 'butt whoopin' reminded me of another story. I've have to give it some thought.
Sounds too like you had a happy and fun 81st birthday. Wishing you many more.
    Blessings and stay well.

Delightfully told from the point of view of yourself as a child. That certainly adds to the immediacy of the adventure. Lovely descriptions of the places you passed on your way. How much freer things were for children in the 1950s!

Oh no! I knew there would be trouble when you mentioned the "gleam of mischief " in your eyes! Boy, first you survive nearly drowning but thanks to your cousin, you were safe. Now you tell me that you and another cousin nearly got run over by a train! Thanks for sharing your memories. God certainly was watching over you!

Dear Jm, this is a very exciting story that you have shared for this contest. And I I understand why you and viola never spoke of that day again.
I really appreciated your descriptions of what your life was like, back in the days when children were not allowed to go into pool parlors, But still hoped that the door would be open and they could see inside.

Hello Janet, a nice wander down memory lane. I enjoyed your story - dangerous thing to do. But you survived - it's what kids do - we are not aware of the dangers. When I was quite young I was on my way to the Brownies (young version of the Girl Guides) . I got off the tram car and ran over the road round the back of it and I was hit by one coming the other way. Fortunately, the bumper on the front of the tram hit me and I went flying on to the pavement. People ran to my aid but I was fine - carried on to the Brownies. Never told my Mum. LOL! We took it in out stride - nowadays they get counselling LOL!. Hope all's well - take care - Love Dorothy xx

Thank you Dorothy for the encouraging review. So pleased that you enjoyed it. I'm not sure how we did survive some of our adventures. My next adventure story is a bit calmer about a space launch that took place in the '60s.

This is a great story and childhood memory, thanks for sharing! Oh, the things we do when we're young...looking back, how DID we survive? I enjoyed your writing style. Your secret is out now! :)

This story recalls an adventure that could have had a tragic ending, but luckily did not. The sense of fear was clearly described in the piece, as was the realization that it was best not to relive the experience or share it with anybody else. Good job.

Wow. You certainly were lucky... I always tell my husband it's a wonder he survived childhood. He has so many "close call" stories like this...

I especially like the last paragraph, about the pact you made.

Good read! Thanks.

That was a close call, Janet. There have been many, many children killed, playing on and around RR tracks, I had two cousins who died in that fashion. A young boy in our church
was killed trying to jump the train. It is a dangerous playground. Well done. Nancy:)

Thank you Nancy for the encouraging review. It's a wonder more children aren't killed on RR tracks. It is definitely a dangerous playground. My Next adventure story is about a space launch that took place in the '60s.
