You are describing a normal world where people could afford anything and live happily in peace. "Travel was not only for the rich and famous; the average person could drive to the mountains from the shore or to the shore from the mountains. Looking back on it now, it is also very nostalgic." Thank you for sharing and good luck with your next chapter.

Loved every word.
I was born in 1958...so this really resonates.
We used to go cross-country camping.
We'd stop at quaint little campgrounds, once
we got caught by a tornado in Idaho. Awesome.

I loved the drive-in diners, that put the
trays on the windows.
A & W...wow...good cheeseburgers, incredible
rootbeer back then...very full flavored, as most
foods were.

And gas stations!!
I was a coin collector, and they actually let me
sort through their registers...can you imagine
that these days? Ha ha...

Great story!!!
Blessings...

Thanks again for the six stars and your wonderful words of support for this piece. Wonderful memories of growing up in the sixties and seventies. Seems like such a simpler time, now. estory

I felt like I was on a mini road trip here and sitting at Howard Johnson's joining my blueberry corn cake. This is just precious.

A few misspellings:

-Howard Johnson's
-Niagara Falls, my former residence.
-tri-state

I hope this is helpful and adds to your fine work.

Sending you my best today as always,
Sally XOs...

Thanks for the excellent review and your wonderful comments; glad this little essay brought those moments from memory back to life for you. I can't believe I forgot how to spell Niagara. It's only five years since I left NY. estory

Vividly evocative! I inferred from your prior chapters that you and I are the same age--this brings me back--Ho-Jo and motels--same food as you describe, Stunning reminiscence!

Thanks so much for the excellent review and your wonderful comments supporting this little piece. I am glad it was able to bring all these childhood memories from that era back to life. The sixties were a complicated, tumultuous time in their own way, but looking back at it now, it seems like a simpler time. estory

My father owned a Texaco station in the late '60s...they ran out to wait on customers!! At the same time, my Grandpa owned a Model T Ford, while my father bought a chartreuse 1950 Ford, brand new. I never knew a time without a car. Your story brought me great memories and is well-written!

Yes, so many things have changed, and I still remember my family's summer vacations. We stayed at motels on the way, but when we got to the national parks, we would pitch a tent and go camping. Automobiles, television sets, air-conditioners, and interstate highways were all part of growing up for me as well as for you. You did an excellent job writing this with plenty of examples to explain how things were back then. This was most enjoyable to read, and I thank you for sharing your experiences.
Have a great day,
Jesse

Thanks so much for the excellent review and your wonderful comments supporting the piece. I think we take alot of things for granted in this world we were born into; it really is hard to believe, but only a hundred years ago, none of these things would be possible. Interstate commerce on this scale, family trips, the rush hour and suburban living; it was all made possible by the mobilization of the economy through the automobile and the highway system. Sometimes we don't realize how much of our way of life is dependent on that. estory

    I agree completely, my friend.
We are so dependent on cars, trucks, and interstate highways.
    Take it easy,
    Jesse

This is an amazing trip down memory lane! I don't have those memories as a young child, since I was born ten years earlier. But I had great teen years. Being Canadian, of course I wouldn't recognize the highways and cities you mention, but for the fact that I've travelled most of them by motorhome during the last ten years. :) It was fun to read, none the less. Good work.

Thanks so much for the excellent review and your perspective on the piece. Our last family vacation all together was actually a two week road trip through Atlantic Canada in the summer of 1977. We drove from New York to Montreal, then to Quebec, which is such a beautiful city, and then through New Brunswick to Nova Scotia where we went to Antigonish, Fort Louisbourg, Cape Breton Isle, Halifax and Digby Neck before taking the ferry back to St. John's NB and driving down the Maine coast back to NY. estory

We did Atlantic Canada on a motorcycle and camping along the way, in 2006. Fun times.

So very true, estory, everything you describe we're just taking for granted in this time and age. I remember driving from Copenhagen, Denmark to Venice in Italy in 1955. I was only three at the time and I was in awe. Hence I remember it. Also it was quite unusual what we did. Gasoline was rationed, a curfew was still in place, and you could only bring so much money with you, and Europe was half in ruins still.
Your splendid essay brought all this along. Yes we've come a long way. You really made the sixties come alive. Ulla:)))

Thanks so much for the wonderful comments and perspective on the story. It is interesting to hear of your own little road trip in Post war Europe, that must have been something but too bad you were really too young to appreciate it all. I think we take so much for granted for sure; its hard to believe, but only a hundred years ago, none of this would have been possible. estory

This is interesting and well-written. It takes me back to the family vacations I took as a child in the seventies and eighties. It's definitely mind-blowing to think how far we've come with travel in such a relatively short amount of time.

Thanks for the good read! Have a great day!

Thanks for the great comments supporting this little story. I think we take so much of our lifestyle today for granted and it is hard to believe, but only a hundred years ago, none of this would have been possible. This whole world we live in today is because of Henry Ford and the building of the interstate highway system. estory
