Wow! That's a new one. I don't think I'd care to try that method of roasting a turkey. It should have been moist, as all the moisture would have been trapped inside the casing. Too bad the mother-in-law couldn't have been more helpful. Actually, it was her son had left the sack of paste powder in harm's way. Delightful telling of the story. judi

Paste-N-Baste, lol. My goodness, what a story. I would have been afraid to eat it, not knowing what weird chemicals were in the glue, but glad it didn't go to waste.
What miserable in-laws to walk out on Thanksgiving. Poor Chuck.

This is beyond hilarious.
The father's reaction when the wife basically forced him to leave is priceless: "The snooty mother-in-law, her trailing husband casting an apologetic glance at Barbara and Joe, stalked out of the house." You just know that he couldn't care less about all the crap his wife cares about.
- '...smashing the casing with a sledgehammer...' had me in stitches.
Great fun reading this.

Hahaha, I can just imagine it. This one is new to me. To cover the bird in plaster, lol. I'm glad the bird was succulent. I can imagine it didn't go down well with the in laws. Ulla:)))

Hilarious! At least, it is from the point of view of the spectator! Not so funny at the time, I imagine. You are skilled in developing these short, humorous anecdotes. I can be assured of a treat when I see one.
I remember once being served spring chicken, or poussin, in France. It had been cooked in a clay pot approximately the same size and shape as the bird. Succulent!

This is truly one of those stories that deserves the six I don't have. But I'm sure you get tired of hearing those words. Thanks for the recipe. I think I'll try plaster turkey. Thanks for sharing.

Great story, well written. I have heard many stories of cooking disasters but this is the best yet - coating the turkey to begin with and then using paste powder instead of flour. Needless to say, it didn't go over very well with the in-laws. But at least the turkey was eatable.

Yes, her story is something else, eh?

I laughed out loud when I read this story. The description of the step-by-step preparation, as well as the satisfying conclusion, painted a vivid picture of the turkey dinner and surrounding events. Well presented, nicely done.

This is hilarious. I think it may be a whole new way of roasting a turkey. I hope the plaster coating flaked off before they tried eating the bird. I've heard many Thanksgiving disasters, but never one of this flavor.

Liz, I've heard some funny stories about novice turkey cookers, like the one who cut two inches off the legs of the turkey because her mother always had, finding out years later this tradition had been passed down a few generations. Originally, it was done only because the bird was too big for the roast pan. I think this one takes the cake, so to speak!
