A great commentary on our lives today. Things are so different from what we were used to. I find with the mask on, it is hard to see what we are doing, even though our eyes are not covered. Shopping used to be an enjoyable outing, now we just want to get in and out of the store as quickly as possible.

You did a good job expressing the effects of the virus on everything from driving to the store to trying to finding items to checking out. The older man was confused to begin with and the face covering mask added to the confusion. The fogging of glasses is awful--sunglasses included. I like your poem at the end. It alludes to the fact that the virus crisis has changed our lives probably forever. I like the way you described the smiling eyes behind the mask of the cashier.

Zanya this is the perfect description of what a simple task of going to the grocery store has become. I never did like shopping much, but it's worse now. I did find that using the self-serve check-out in one store is almost painless once you get the hang of it. There is seldom a line-up.

This is a very well-written haiban. Try teaching and hearing in a hybrid virtual method with a mask on, in the spring, when you have aggravated allergies, and wear glasses. It makes for one hot mess.

It doesn't take people long to learn the world we live in is not the same, but it is beginning to feel like the life we exist it. There have been many changes over the years and what we've experience this last year is the biggest change of all. Still we fall in line and adjust to the new world order.

You describe our new ways of doing those simple chores of life these days. I liked that you show us that the cashier's eyes "flash a smile." I like that we can see that even though our smiles are blocked by the masks. Thanks for sharing this well done haibun!
