Charming story! Delightful wrap-up re kissing cousins. You masterfully set the scene and skillfully render the tale--imagery is vividly evocative of the momentous event!

Oh my! I'm so glad your cousin Donny was there to get you out. I'm glad that you're "kissing cousins." But I'm pretty sure that the National Geographic Magazines wants to be cleared of misleading you! Lol. Fun story especially that you were safe!

Well, the little water snakes would be enough to make me run far away. You did a great job recounting this fun, but dangerous, story. I believe it will be read with interest by many after the book is published. Your words are descriptive and filled with great imagery. I enjoyed reading it. Will you contribute more to the book?
Thanks for sharing.
Respectfully, Jan

Thank you Jan for the wonderful review. I'm so pleased you enjoyed it. I can't believe I did what I did back then. I was and am so scared of snakes (neighborhood boys used to chase the girls around with them just to hear us scream.)
I do have another story about a 'train trestle' in our town that I have sent to my friend. I will post that one soon and I have a couple of other stories rumbling around in my mind to write about. Thanks for asking.

This is a great write. A tidy short story that takes us back to adventures of childhood. It blows my mind that you were twelve and didn't know how to swim yet. Scary stuff, thinking about what could have happened to you...

Thank you Erika for the wonderful review. I'm so pleased you enjoyed it.
Where we lived, there were no pools (except for the forbidden one) where you could learn to swim. I never did learn.
I did, however, make sure my children could swim at an early age.

This is a wonderful story to add to your friend's book. What a great idea. You were indeed adventurous, but maybe a little to trusting of what you read. I'm happy your cousin was watching out for you. Thanks for sharing.

One thing I'm not sure about: "I read in a National Geographic Magazine that if you jump into deep water, you will just start swimming. Well, it might have been in the National Geographic Magazine." - I'm not sure what you're trying to do with this repetition.

Thank you Judy for the wonderful review. I'm so pleased you enjoyed it.

The National Geographic reference was to say "well maybe it wasn't actually in the National Geographic". Kind of like I was giving it a little more credence.

This is a well written and entertaining story, from the first paragraph about Miss Swanson snitching on the neighborhood children, to Donny saving your life. You provide a great description of kids in small-town Pennsylvania. I grew up in Philadelphia, so my stories would be quite different. This story will be a welcomed addition to your friend's book.

God obviously didn't want you to drown, so he gave a cousin to save you, if you had of drowned he probably would have got into trouble for not saving you anyway, thanks for sharing dear Janet, blessings Roy

This story is solid in its structure and strong in it recollection of a childhood memory that could have resulted in tragedy, but happily did not. Well presented.

JMF:

Oh, no! I am so upset that I cannot believe that everything I read in the National Geographic is not true. What am I to tell my 12-year-old granddaughter? This is a great story. The book your friend is putting together should be fantastic. Make sure there are stories about when Miss Swanson ratted you out when you thought you had gotten away with something.
