Nolan is a fine name; it's unbelievable how mean kids can be at times.
It's a great thing that your mother was adamant about not naming her son Doris. My mother's name is Doris, so I do love that name.

Thank you. Doris is a beautiful name on a female. Not so much on a male. I think there is far too much confusion concerning gender and gender identification to further blur the lines. Research has shown that gender ID is important to establish early in a child's life.

Good story. I don't have to worry about anyone taking my name which is Eunice because it's too old. Nolan is a nice name and yes it can get aggravating when everyone else has your name. I lived some where one time and people called me all the time, not because of my name but my phone number. Your name wasn't a problem I would pick on you for. That was sad for you were picked on for nothing. Very good writer. Keep up the good work.

My birth name was Margaret Esther Sayers. Margaret for my mother, Esther for my Jewish great-grandmother and the Jewish Queen, and the last name speaks of my Irish roots. I have had numerous nom de plumes over the years but from I young age I hated the name Margaret and was teased-it the UK it is still considered an older woman's name. Esther was weird and embarrassing as my father whose grandmother had bore that name, had told me never to mention I was one quarter Jewish in case political situations took another turn against them, and when found out, people threw pennies at me in class, in front of the teacher, who remarked I was so lucky not to 'Look' Jewish...my own history teacher used me as an example of an Aryan looking person who would have still been extinguished by Hitler's army in the second world war in the labour camps. As a model I chose the name Lauren after Lauren Bacall and Sophia Loren. Sophia is Mussolini's niece I later found out! When I joined the site I was given the name Meia by a wonderful woman Nana Beeson who became a true spirit friend. I believe she passed away. She told me it was my spirit name. Now I am proud of my middle name. I was not pleased to discover another writer named Margaret Esther Peden Sayers and there is an Irish writer of nearly 200b years ago named Maggie/Peggy Sayers as well as Dorothy L.Sayers. I REALLY like the name Nolan! And now my friends call me Maggie. After giving up modelling and returning to study and writing I finally felt comfortable enough to feel my name is who I am and Meia remains my writing name because it was given to me by a special lady. I really REALLY enjoyed this write. It was clever, funny and engaging. Our names are so much about us and then really so little being as they can be changed at any time. I loved this and really enjoyed reading your fantastic writing again kindest regards Meia x

Wow! My dear friend Meia. You will always be Meia to me because that is the name I have always known you by and the that came to love you as friend by. My belief is that, my name is what I am called, but my character is how I am known.

What an interesting story about your name. To me it sounds very refined and original, without being quirky, like some of the names given today. Thank you. I particularly loved the song by Johnny Cash, 'A Boy Named Sue'. No I do not believe that I would have liked it one bit. You can get used to many things in life, but I do not believe that being named Doris is one of them.

I went by the name Junie until my freshman year of high school when my English teacher took roll, and when I answered to the name Junie Squires, she snorted and said, "Junie is a girl's name." I felt as exposed as a weight lifter whose gym sorts ripped right in the middle of a squat! Well, Nolan, I changed it there and then to Jay Squires and kept it at that even though rumor had it that I broke my mom's heart when I changed it. Nolan, on the other hand, is common, in my estimation, as a first name.

It is and please be clear, I now love the name, so much so that I am thrilled whenever I encounter another person so named. I feel now that I have an army. So, if anyone wants to come after someone named Nolan, they had better be aware that there are literally hundreds, maybe even thousands of us.

Why, had you never heard of Nolan Ryan? I think Nolan is a great name! It's original, but not dorky or trendy. It's good and solid. :-) I chose my daughters name 32 years ago because I felt it was unique but yet traditional and pretty. It is Caitlin. I had never heard it before, but my mom saw it as a characters name in a book and I fell in love with it. Imagine my surprise when there were three other babies with the same name in the nursery at the hospital. I was so mad. :-)

I sought to give my son and daughter standard English sounding names [Kevin Scott Miller and Jennifer Erin Miller] They have expressed their gratitude for that. Their names have proved to be an asset rather than something they might have had to explain.

This is well-written and quite amusing as well as interesting. I hope none of your doppelgangers has been a con man. My dad had that problem, and his name was unusual. My neighbors have a 15-year-old Nolan and I think it's a cool name for him.
