What a great piece! The writing and story telling drew me in instantly. The way you addressed the German-Jew clash through the lens of children is fantastic. It is filled with pure innocence and sheer curiosity which is endearing.
To establish such a meaningful relationship in a prison through the barbed wire fence is symbolic. The outside speaks of freedom and life while the inside smells of horror and death- a beautiful imagery. What I find genius is the interpretation of a prisoner's attire as striped pyjamas.
Bravo my friend!

I saw the movie this picture came from and it is a very memorable one. It highlights the horrible atrocities of war from the viewpoint of innocent children. I just watched the movie a few months ago, where both boys wearing striped pyjamas entered the gas chamber and were killed and all that was left for the father in charge of the camp to find was his son's clothing outside the wire fence enclosing the concentration camp.
You have done a fabulous job of this. It was such a sad movie, and I am glad you have reminded me of it again.

This is a beautifully written story, but a horrible story about horrible events. The German father who cared nothing about a Jewish boy's life could possibly kill his own boy. Rightfully so, this poem leaves the reader with an uneasy feeling.

I think you have the meaning backwards. The children changed clothes and the German boy decided to take the Jewish boy's place. So, the father had nothing to do with it. Thanks for reading, much appreciated. K xx

It's possible I misunderstood. Here is what I thought and why:
Stanza 1, line 1: The German boy stared at the fence.
Line 4: His father in charge of the prison.
Stanza 5: The German boy said, Line 3: "My father is camp Commandant
The boys exchange clothing
Stanza 9, Line 3: The German Commandant cried "Where is my boy?
My interpretation: His boy was wearing the striped pajamas of a Jew. The father, the Commandant, cared nothing about Jewish boys, but now his own son was wearing the clothing of a Jewish boy, meaning his son may be set up to die at the Commandant's command.
Either way, this is a powerful story.

You have really plucked my heartstrings with this one. The one good thing I can take away from the children's trick is that the German father realized what the Jews were going through. But how horrifying for the little German boy when he learned what would happen to him. You've re-told the story very well.
