Hi Jim, this is again a very well written chapter. So Brucher's eyes are set on a better life. That is yet to be seen. But he's a cunning fellow. At the moment I'm sitting firmly on the fence when it comes to him
He does have the foresight to see that the war has been lost to the allies. His superior obviously doesn't like to hear that. Great story and writing. Ulla:)))

Thank you so much for this encouraging review. Yes, Brucker will become increasingly important as time goes on. Well spotted.

-A very good image and chapter.
-I found Brucker a very interesting person.
-He had a good head on his shoulders,
considering the position they were in.
-The Oberleutnant, on the other hand,
was sticking to the old regime, even
though he was unable to be moved
and take care of himself.
-So Brucker more or less was in control,
especially when he was ready to defend
himself when faced with the opposing pistol.
-The last section with the papers Brucker had
were also interesting, and I wouldn't be
surprised if they came into play later on,
and be to his advantage.
-It should prove interesting.

Thank you for this splendid appreciation of the situation these two find themselves in. Just how accurate it might be you will find out soon, but not quite yet.

I am happy you're teaching poetry. Thank you for sharing another addition of this story to us.

Now for die verdammten Papiere! he thought, trying to remember exactly where it was that his Oberleutnant had lain (thought should be in italics and go straight to I tried to remember...)

Yes indeed, much of the story lying head rests on the question of parentage. Many thanks for this six-star review

I thought this a remarkably good chapter, Jim. You have given an excellent description of the Germans' predicament and their reaction to it. I imagine escape and evasion exercises in the past may have stood you in good stead. The result is most realistic.
My only suggestion would be to put the German snippets such as die verdammten Papiere and Alles ist verloren! in italics.

I thought i had just replied to this!

Many thanks for this six star review. I may well go to italics for the German bits despite reading somewhere that this was no longer the fashion. Have you come across that one?

How awful the war was and how brain-washed the Nazis were. The pilot would be honored to die for Hitler. The other soldier, despite his service, would be executed if certain facts were known. You draw the read in completely.

Hi Jim. Of course not having read every other chapter in this story I'm at a bit of a loss, but not too much so. Anything written by yourself is educational and I read to learn. I can see quite easily why you are number one, your attention to detail. Strangely as a reader I lean heavily in the other direction, anything to do with the persecution in the death camps. Oh, I am not morbid. I wonder two things. How one group of human beings can hate another with such single-minded dedication. And two how the other group can outlive and survive such hatred. Sincerely Anne.

I was pleased to have a hint of what the personal papers that BrĂ¼cker was carrying dealt with. This will give me food for thought until Sunday, when hopefully all will be revealed.

Sunday might be a little early for revelations as we have to know to whom any revelations will be made apparent first. Mzny thanks for reading and reviewing this chapter.

Aha. When I read the name Liebermann, my first thought was, could this be a Jewish name with an alternative spelling for the purpose of disguising its true nature or source? Might I just say, this is an interesting development that could result in many different scenarios as an aftermath.
