This is a sobering write which invites the reader to examine both sides of an important historical time. Well written and combined with the picture it is an excellent entry.

Oh how beautiful and heartbreaking. What a sad way for a small boy to remember his dad. His Mom got a folded flag and he got a memory of hatred. War is never a lovely thing but if there were none those louts would not be holding their placards.

Maintaining honor in warfare is difficult when atrocities are always committed during conflict and the military will always be blamed for civilians' suffering. Protestors always use the most heated language and symbolism to push their point - 'baby killer' is probably the most emotive description to hurl. Yes, it did happen, babies were killed, but to tar every vet was shameful, when most were doing their patriotic duty in difficult circumstances.
Your simply told story personalizes this tragedy in a gently impartial manner through the innocent questions of a child.

A very well written story, and you have brought it well to its conclusion, sad though it is. Like you, I pray that all those who have given their life or time in service for their country may be shown thankfulness and respect.
Good wishes for the contest.

The way the Vietnam veterans returning home were treated is a stain on our history. They still fought, and their blood still flowed. What a terrific story, told with all the necessary story components. And what a horrid thing for a young boy to have to consider.

Wishing you great luck in the booth.

Heartbreaking. Stunning ending--hadn't seen that coming. Ingenious misdirection, they're walking downtown--I envisioned the pair out for a mundane errand--then comes the cemetery scene, then the shock that it's his father, then the devastating punch.

Wow! Heavy, emotional. Really brought home how mistreated and unappreciated our military are. Protestors have the right to protest because others, like this boy's father, gave their lives. By the way, no typos and well written. Thank you.

Virtual Six

What a great piece of work. It brings about thought. It is saying something without saying it. I always like to see poetry written this way, though it is not a poem.
This is a very evocative piece of work.
I could have read more.
Sorry limited sixes.
This is deserved.
My best wishes, and good luck in the competition.

My best wishes.

My husband was a Vietnam War Veteran sent there when he was only 18...
to this day he refuses to talk about it and how he felt when he returned home. America should be ashamed. They did not ask to go there but they did their duty as told. Your story says it all. Smiles, Carol

This Flash From the Past contest entry, the story speaks the story emphatically and clearly; I like and have enjoyed the read about culture, as how words hurt. Well said; well done; thank you for sharing this. ALCREATOR
