I like the picture. It shows how innocent children are...

I like the story. It is a moving one. I survived the Vietnamese war. I was born there and my family had differed a lot throughout the war.

Thanks for sharing history.

Your story sent shivers up my spine. Many of us lived through that era, and have a litany of memories. It was a terrible war, as they all are, with great loss and grief. I wonder when it will all end...
Well written and impactful.
Linda

"Words Hurt" How well your story illustrates that. Congratulations on winning the Contest. I like the picture you have chosen and can just imagine what is running through this little boy's mind.

I'm sorry I don't have a six for this marvelous work, dear Earl. My brother Steve served in Vietnam, three tours. He was a Green Beret and highly decorated. He didn't die there but he came home with Agent Orange related cancer. Actor Chuck Norris honored his grave. I wrote about him in "Letters From Heaven's Gateway #7." It was my highest ranked story from 2020. He hated the massacres by the VietCong and their hoffific tortures. He also hated Jane Fonda. "She has no clue," he said of her. Sending you my best today as always,
Sal XOs....

Even though I served four years in the Air Force during the Vietnam Era, I am now a member of a religion "Jehovah's Witnesses" who do serve in the military. We chose to suffer jail time rather than serve. We however, do not protest, call people names or any such things. Our belief is that all men are brothers or at least should be considered so. Our stand is backed by our willingness to suffer the consequences of our belief.

It is a good heartfelt story. I do not find fault in any man standing up for what he believes in and finds value in.

What a heartbreaking story.
Although I'm not an American, I remember the war and the scenes you describe above. They were very painful to watch. A friend of mine from Florida was killed in Viet Nam, so even though I have no right to comment as to whether or not it was a necessary war, I wish it hadn't happened.
But that being said, it did happen, and I think that what was done to the vets was despicable.

This flash fiction is amazing. It is so poignant and thought provoking. It shows that you must choose your words correctly when talking to children. Best wishes. Jen

Very good story and very touching. My friend came back from Vietnam and landed in an airport 10 miles from his home. As he walked home along the highway in his uniform people slowed down to spit on him. I'm sure your story occurred more than once in reality. You used all those few words to very good effect.

I remember this and it was disgraceful then and what's happening in America now is sickening. I have the president's speech on now, and he
just said the "attack' on the Capitol was the worst thing since the Civil War. I had to leave the room.
Patriotism in government, as of this administration, is the antithesis of patriotism.
I'm sorry, your post says it all. I am heartsick over the ruin this president is causing and the pure lies being told.
I guess I'm assuming things. At any rate, thank you for your post and reminding us what patriotism means.
