One thing sly Jim had going is his parties were memorable enough that at least you have not forgotten is his is birthday years after his death. Jim would be proud.

Thanks--I think so! You were one of my fans from way back who read the script--as for the rest, it is up to fate--mum's the word, alas.

Hi Liz. So sorry about your friend. He sounds like he was one of the good people; you probably have oodles of memories.
Rules are not always logical, but maybe with enough searching, folks will find your tributes, etc.
I think it's great that Jim celebrated his birthday each year, even though it was a disguised event.
A few years ago, a good friend of mine held a birthday party for herself at which each friend had to say something nice about her. She wanted to hear the compliments while she was still alive. She didn't want the words wasted at her funeral!
I thought that was so clever; everyone had a ball!

Something nice while she's alive to enjoy it. Great idea! Better a toast than a roast.
As for the rules not being logical--they make perfect sense--from TOM's perspective ...
-
Who's Tom?
-
TOM is the King of StoryLand!
-
Long may he reign!
This is lots of fun.

Oh, the irony of it. Celebrating Patriot's Day when it was on his birthday. Having lived in MA for a few years, I know how big Patriot's Day was. Did Jim let it be known that presents were expected in honor of Patriot's Day? I think it was sweet of him to make the occasion Patriot's Day instead of his birthday. I usually don't re-promote. Have you noticed a person on FS who promotes poetry and short works to the max, and garners reviews numbering over 80. Then I saw it's because he's repromoted time and again. judi

Yes, I've noticed a few who do that--and each time they pay lot$$$$$$$$$ to top the list.
-
I don't know what they get out of it. It isn't going to count in the highest rated poem of the month contest anyway. judi
-
They crave continual ego-boosts!
-
I think you're right. That need for an ego boost is the answer. judi
-
A few have TWO posts per week up at 1.25--to get to $1 costs 15 pumps; then one pump per penny thereafter--thus 40 pumps at $3 per = $120 + 10 base promotion cost = $130 for EACH post at $1.25
There are many here who don't want to spend hours to accrue credits by reviewing; thus they spend literally hundred$$$$$$ per month to promote their poetry to the top of the chart. Because the payout is good, lots of people review, and they don't dare give less than 5-stars because the poet may (probably will!) mute them, and thus no more earning easy money from sucking up to the poet's future posts.
I won't waste real $ to buy myself a select circle of simpering syncophants.

It does get to be expensive. judi

Thanks for remembering a friend, because that is what friends do.
Thanks for reminding us about Patriots' Day.
I was born in Boston and grew up in Massachusetts. I used to celebrate the holiday in MA by going deep sea fishing. We never knew what the weather would be like, and sometimes we had snow.
One of the men I worked with at Honeywell, made fifes using wood from the Wayside Inn in Sudbury, which is near where the fist shot was fired.
I'll try to find your other stories.
Thanks for your support!

The fewer the reviews, the more money fs makes because it keeps the money not used by reviewers. Don't be surprised if someone digs out those stories and reads them but does not review them. Some day. As time allows.Your writing gets better all the time--more fluent, effective voice.

After so many years of celebrating with Jim it's hard to break a cycle. And of course, everyone always says things like your lucky to have all the fond memories of those 19 years. But in reality, memories don't always make us smile when we know the good times are gone forever. Thanks for sharing.

So true. Thus the expression "bittersweet."

Hello
thank you for the heads up!
I have been away from this site a bit ...I have been submitting stories to actual journals and such. The problem being: many places will now not accept stories or work if it has appeared anywhere on the internet. Even though this is a 'closed' site, it disqualified my work....
I just got a third in a short story competion, quite respected, whcih included having the story publsihed in a real book, an antholgy of the short listed stories. I am right chuffed!
I hope you are safe and well,

How clever of your friend...Got his party without all the birthday hoopla. Way to go, Jim. May he celebrate in Heaven and watch over his friends, especially ones who post kind tributes to him. Smiles, Carol

Hello Liz.
Jim sounds like a really good guy. You have made some interesting friends over the years. I think it's great that you build relationships with people. That's a lost art in these days. People prefer having relationships in which there is a "pay off."
For my funeral, every friend that comes, has one minute with an open mic to say what they think.
Sorry I'm going to miss it. I plan to write a story about that.

Sad to read about your good friend passing away. I like how sneaky Jim was just inviting everyone for a party every year for twenty years, maybe more, and never really telling anyone that it was actually for his birthday, haha. He made it a tradition and the rest of the attendees became creatures of habit and accepted that tradition on face value.
This made for a really nice read so thank you for sharing! :-)
