It is so sad that in this time of the virus, people have to limit the number of people at a memorial service. I hope your friend does well as a widow.

Hello Liz,
I enjoyed reading your post.
Glad you were able to get together with Gale so soon after the funeral. I bet she really values your company and friendship, especially right now...
Can I ask, what is 'stewp?' I'm not familiar with it!
Best wishes as always, Debra :)

It's very classy of you that you made it about Gale and not your feelings about Rick.
He seems to have had a legitimate medical reason for his outbursts, but that doesn't make it any easier to live with. Your friend Gale obviously had patience and sympathy to spare.

What particularly impressed me was that you didn't drop off a casserole; you gave of your time and let Gale express what she needed to.

It's not easy to have a friend whose husband you're not keen on. You are a generous friend.

    Thank you for that!

Rick was never physically abusive, and Gale knew what she was getting into--she was 48 when they married--her first husband was cold to her and cheated--she was happy that Rick, on the other hand, wanted her and she wanted a companion--he's 8 years older--she always forgave him his childish tantrums. Her friends we appalled that she married him, but she had no regrets. She's a committed Christian and vowed never to leave him.

Thanks for sharing your thoughts! Cheers. LIZ

Thank you for sharing and for being such a good friend. I think the best things of a person are memorialized so I'm glad you let Gale share those best parts with you.

How ironic that some people who'd made reservations to attend the memorial service didn't show up. I think a lot of people, like Gale, want to dwell on the good about their departed loved ones and forget about the bad. I know my mother-in-law did that about her husband when he passed on. It seems like you're doing the right thing by Gale. She was glad to have someone to share her memories with. judi

You're very welcome. Sometimes it's hard to figure what causes these emotions in people. judi

You did the right thing, Liz. Because of the circumstances, you had no way to know that some would not show up for the actual service. By calling Gale, you let her know that she wasn't forgotten by you. Thanks for sharing the added info about Rick.
Thanks for sharing.
Respectfully, Jan

Liz,

I'm so sorry to hear about your friend's husband. I know you've spoken about it before, but I also know it sure doesn't get any easier for the ones hurting. Please pass on condolences, if you choose.

Bless you for being such a good friend!

First, my condolences, Liz, for your friend Gale and for the fact that you weren't able to be with her at the funeral. It's too bad that your impressions of Rick were not good, but maybe because you are so close to Gale, you saw a different side of him than others did. It's hard to put ourselves in the shoes of other, but you are giving Gale the support she needs.

So many times we don't know the circumstances that cause a person to act the way they do. And believe me, I'm the worst for not tolerating dicks and $#^%**&s who are inconsiderate of other's feelings. I'll never forget the time this couple's punk-dressed son kept popping off curse words and staring at me. Finally, I pointed and said, "One more word chunky and I'll beat your ass all over this store." It turned out he had turrets syndrome and couldn't help his outbursts. I wanted to hide under the Charmin and Cottonelle. Thanks for sharing.

What a shitshow that must have been. So good of you to allow her to grieve with you and it seems like you may have learned a little something from the experience. Thanks for keeping us updated!
