There is power in these words. People are not born to be inherently annoying or unlikeable. They are shaped by many things. The wisdom here is that in spite of Sandra's seeming self-absorption you continued to step beyond that and reach out with a gesture of good will and birthday wishes. None of us truly understands the pain within another's heart...

There is power in these words. People are not born to be inherently annoying or unlikeable. They are shaped by many things. The wisdom here is that in spite of Sandra's seeming self-absorption you continued to step beyond that and reach out with a gesture of good will and birthday wishes. None of us truly understands the pain within another's heart...

Just when I think you're (legitimately) complaining about someone, you pull the rug out from under my feet and again reinforce that until we walk in someone's shoes, we can't possibly know what makes them as they are.
Thanks for the reminder to appreciate what we have and to show patience with those who may not have anything worth feeling grateful for.

People are all complex being and it is hard to put them in a box. Most women are unpredictable, but most can be counted on to name their pains if they think they might obtain a shred of sympathy. Sandra, like you, deserves some credit for being involved in serving the community.

Sandra is annoying.
You tolerate her annoyingness because she has lots of serious 'stuff' going on in the background. You guys at the food pantry, are probably the only people she gets to be self-centred around and unfortunately, you are her 'outlet'.
As far as I can see, you're keeping her sane and I reckon that she appreciates you far more than you realise. After all, she remembered to ask after your welfare and thanked you for bringing cheer to her day, despite the various burdens she has taking up her attention.
I think you totally 'get it' though.... I can tell that by the 'scratch that' comment at the end :) You're a kind and compassionate lady...

I have to say that in the end, I decided to like her. You did a good job writing a balanced piece about Sandra. She is not perfect. She was whiny and didn't appreciate gifts from others. She doesn't remember other's birthdays. But in the end she thank you profusely for giving her a birthday card.
