This is a nicely written rhyming poem. And I can't wait until the day when I can swing from that old bough of the tree that stood in grandmas yard. I understand it now. Well done. Good luck in the contest.

I agree. At the time we hear those words, we are too busy with 'stuff.' Then time goes by, things change, and then we are the age of our parents reminiscing about our youth. You did a good job with your contest entry. I enjoyed reading and reviewing it. The rhymes work well. Best wishes.
Thanks for sharing.
Respectfully, Jan

This rhyming poem articulates well the rnotion that age brings wisdom, and understanding. The poem flows well and creates a trigger within the reader to contemplate past situations with the aid of the wisdom he or she has gathered as they aged. An image of some sort may enhance the tone/ theme of the work. Great job.

Understanding our parents is something we learn as we age and follow the same path as them. In your description you may mean (comes), much enjoyed, love Dolly x

I enjoyed this poem a lot and found it to be relatable to all the reminiscing I tend to do. The rhyming worked well although I think the last stanza could take a second look, as bough and now are a bit of a stretching with rhyming. But it's a great piece!

Thank you Chris. This is not actually my favorite poem and I agree with you. I could work on it.

This has a lot of potential and I enjoyed the evocative nature of the piece. But something undefinable kept me from liking it more. I think there were cases where word choices felt strained and pushed. With editing I think you'd have a lovely piece.

Thank you Ozy, I appreciate your candor. I truly am not a writer, rather just putting to paper what I feel in the moment. My guess is you are a professional and make a living from writing or perhaps teaching? I can always learn, even at my age but I'm not always so patient. LOL

I've been published in books and business journals but I don't teach and certainly don't make a living writing. But I enjoy reading and on this site I simply say what I feel. And feel is an important aspect of writing. If you pay attention to the natural rhythms of conversation and incorporate that into your writing. That includes the way folks speak - meaning try to avoid language that feels stilted and unnatural. Write the way people think and talk. Just ask yourself, would a person say this out loud?

Good insight Ozy. I really do just "put it out there" and if it sticks, great, if not, it's okay. That is NOT my best poem but I'm definitely not a writer, just an older woman (I can't believe I'm 77) that thinks of herself as a "storyteller of sorts." Thanks again. I really do appreciate truthful feedback.

Hello Charlene,
This is another delightful poem. I don't know if we just get too busy raising families, going to work, or a hundred other things that get in the way, to appreciate the finer things in life. We're always being sold something, promising pleasure. It's too bad we don't learn early on that the best things in life are free. Don't get in too much of a hurry to swing on that bough, you've got a lot to offer right now. God bless and keep you.

Excellent work! I am 76, a young 76 - but I grow tired of the world and remember my Grandparents' farm where I played so freely and happily. I pray that when the final moment comes I will find myself in those fields, being called by Grandpa to come eat flapjacks. You wrote this so well!!

A beautiful poem, very well written. So many times we wish we had known when we were younger what we know today. But we all have to learn through experience and there is no going back.

Your poem reminds us that every generation once was young and it often takes each many years to "understand" the joys of being young. Thanks for reminding us. Rod

Thank you SO much Rod. It's really true, we never know what wonderful things we had until they are no longer there.
