First the good news - LOL
This is written in your iconic humorous style and is so fun to read. I love some of your expressions; they're so witty (a glut of show preceding the tell, at-first-sitis).
Now the less good news:
I'm so disappointed with your 'don't believe in at-first-sitis' attitude! Are you telling me that you have forever eliminated from your life the sappy, moronic, 'glance-across-the-room-and-instant-love' nonsense made famous by Johnny Mathis, and Jay and the Americans, and Barry Manilow, and Styx and countless others?
I'm heartbroken.

So sorry to disappoint, Ryma! You are so funny--post that bit.
If I didn't have Amazon reviews to look forward to perhaps I wouldn't slog through! Nice to see you, as always.

I don't always stick with a novel once I've started it. I've even abandoned (for now) a novel by one of James Patterson's minions. "Telling" can be quite annoying in TV dramas too. I the "Midsomer Murders" series there is always a lot of it as the murderer goes into lengthy detail about why he committed the crimes, or the officer will tell him why he did it. The best writers can circumvent the rules. That must be the case with the writer you cited. I'm not familiar with Shreve's books. judi

I used to be like that read a book from the begining to the end, even if I didn't like it. Now I am more picky, if I don't like it, I drop it:) too much to read and not enough time. Thank you for sharing and good luck with your writings.

We suffer from the same compulsion... Once I've committed to a book I refuse to give up! I will read it to the end... ON occasion, pleased that sometime midway through the book (aha!) the plot thickens, the theme becomes clear, the author seems to find his or her footing...
Sometimes I am not so lucky...
I happen to love Anita Shreve...and have read both of the books referenced above. Also like you, I enjoy a review--but not either a spoiler review or one which lays out the plot so specifically I am left feeling like either the author (or her publisher- devalues my ability as a reader to find my way along the theme OR by exposing SO much I will run not walk to pick up said book.)
No thanks.. Tell me generally what the book is about. Let me do my own discovery...

Most recently, the books I've read start slow, resembling all the Netflix, Prime, and made for TV series and movies that all crawl in the beginnings. I've even gone as far as stop reading after 40 or 50 pages in, or watching after a few minutes or two or three episodes. No hook and no interest. But, being a never give up sort, I've since gone back to try reading or watching again and found that many start building, some at a fast pace, and even get to be very good. A few even memorable. Now I'm just starting to think maybe our patience has become the biggest problem. Sorry for another novella. Thanks for sharing.

Hi Liz.
I have a bad habit of not reading things I believe I would not be interested in before I open the cover. I like a certain kind of writing and I search for that kind of writing. I just started "The Space Trilogy" by CS Lewis. The only thing I wish is that the print were little larger. The three books are in a single volume so it is tiny.

Ok I'm confused. It it's early. Should it be in a thong? inexplicably, and irrevocably, drawn to a woman he spies in a throng.
I was thinking because it's show don't tell. Help me out!

I've seen some things I thought was sexy or attractive and the impression lasts for minute or two. Love at first sight is a little ridiculous in my opinion. A conversation with such a person might deepen the first impression to ten or fifteen minutes.

Liz, I tend to agree with you. I try not to give up on a book before I've read at least a few chapters. I'm often pleasantly surprised at how much better it gets. I wonder if sometimes the first chapters disappoint because they don't seem to match the title of the book? Creating catchy titles is my downfall I think. Ha, ha I was wondering about throng verses thong too. I see someone else thinks like me.

Good for you for continuing to read, I can't do it. If I try, I simply end up not reading for months. Love at first sight? Nah. Attraction, infatuation, intrigue? Okay. But love is a completely different matter. Although I must admit, I'm also weary of the opposite--man meets woman, they despise each other but in the end fall in love that's been done again, and again, and again!
