we all grow old day by day. I like how you describe aging as
"His aged hands displayed the hard times worn by blisters turned to callouses, turned to hardened "leather-like..."
I like grandpa's prayers. It gives us hope in our daily life as he says:
"His supper prayers always spoken with such positive assurance that His God provided for his every means, while I sat watching, and a waitin' ... he - making certain gramma
got her share of the vittles --"
Thanks for sharing.

I do truly love this so much! I feel that you were fortunate to have this man as family and I especially like this line,: "Isn't it just a wonder ... just look around!"

This free verse, Grandpa John, pays tribute to that figure in a young man's life who becomes the epitome of manhood and a head of one's heart and household.

Wonderful memories JLR and they sound just as vivid reading your lovely free verse tribute as they did to that 18-year-old boy who took hold of the flag. Thanks for sharing, it is important for us to share their memories.
cheers,

A fine salute honouring a fine man, the sort of man it is a privilege to meet. There are more lessons to be learnt from a man such as this than one can find in any school. You really make him come to life in your poem. Much enjoyed.

Remember the life and joy of having a grandpa - I was eighteen when grandpa passed on ...
I stood man tall as I watched them --
ever so sacredly folded the flag into the symbolic tri-corned
shape -- thirteen times and then they laid that flag into my hand's.
Which I gripped vise-like and cried!

You paint a vivid word - portrait of your grandpa. Love and admiration shine through the lines. For it's evident your grandpa cared as deeply for you as you did for him.
Well composed prose poem that holds the reader's attention.
Best of luck in the contest.
Stay safe healthy and blessed

Well written and touching. My great grandfather passed away when I was too young to really talk to him, and recently I've been wishing I could. Thank you for sharing this.

I know that this was free verse, but to me to pace and cadence seemed so smooth, who would know? I enjoyed because I was so close to not only my grandparents, but some other folks so close to me. Well written and beautifully presented.
