Excellent advice. I'd find it hard if not impossible to be anyone but myself. I learned a long time ago to not let what others think bother me too much. People can be so unkind, especially when one puts out writing from their heart.

Interesting poem. I agree. Roses should try to be roses and lavenders should remain lavenders. Can't imagine what will happen if they imitate each other. The world is big enough to accommodate everyone. I enjoyed your poem. Thanks for sharing!

Sally, you have expressed the heart of a true poet. Brave writers color outside the lines and don't worry about the naysayers. Usually there will be someone who truly understands and enjoys the creation. As they used to say in the sixties, "Different strokes for different folks." I think that is especially true for strokes of the pen. Nothing is more boring than absolute conformity. None of this means that every poem or piece of prose is great and shouldn't be open to constructive suggestions. But even those suggestions should be tested for merit.

I'm not sure any of us are our true selves all the time, trying to keep a stiff upper lip, or smile away the tears. Although, many like me, couldn't be anyone else even if they wanted to, or not for long. Thanks for sharing.

I really needed to be reminded of this, because since returning to writing myself, I've been directed in so many directions I almost said it wasn't worth it. It's no one's fault but my own because as you say I wasn't being true to myself. We should listen, consider and then adapt if we please.... Loved the poem and thanks for the gentle reminder.
