A beautiful image! And equally lovely poem inspired by summer heat. I can relate - we sometimes have temperatures above 115 Fahrenheit, which is not pleasant especially with accompanying high humidity!

Thank you. I dread summer. It's very hot and humid here.

Stranger things have happened. LOL.

We'll get there. My mother-in-law was sensitive to the sun, so she made sure to wear her straw hat when she was outside. Great imagery of the summer heat flexing its muscles. We need to be careful of the sun, as my husband's bouts with skin cancer testify. judi

I'm sorry to hear of your husband's bouts with skin cancer. I, too, have to be careful of the sun. I have lupus. Thanks for reviewing.

You're very welcome. I think my husband has all those trouble spots taken care of now. judi

A wonderful personification of summer heat creates a vivid mental image in this haiku. The artwork chosen to illustrate the piece highlights the piem's theme.

I like this haiku a lot for its suggestion of personification. Your second line is also very descriptive and felt torturous indeed. Super 's' consonance with flexes, torturous, muscles, hats.

Oh yes, I don't go anywhere without my straw hat! That is when I am in Spain where the sun constantly shines, it is a little chilly just now and your poem warmed me up! Love Dolly x

Your ultra-concise haiku is very well-written and descriptive of the scorching heat of summer in some areas. Effective use of personificaton. Give me spring and the fall!

Me, too. Even winter. I could do without summer forever! Thanks, Janice.

This haiku, Summer Heat, presented with a 3-7-4 formatting, finds the sun bullying the tender skinned beings on the surface of the earthen griddle.

Great poem. We just returned from a few errands outside. We were delighted to see that the temp had climbed to 43 degrees F. Woo Hoo! We're in the middle of a heat wave. Spring is on the way.
Have a wonderful (and cool) day.

I'm in Wasilla Alaska. Several days ago it was unseasonably cold overnight, around zero to three below. I've yet to spend a summer here; for the last 44 years I've lived in Southeast Alaska in a rain forest. We had several years of hot, sunny, dry summers. In excess of 80 degrees, which I know doesn't sound hot to you, but the air is so clean and the sun so intense that I was sweltering. Plus the snow pack melted early and lots of salmon died because the water was too warm and too low for spawning. That in turn caused the bears to come into town because they were hungry. Every place has something to deal with I guess.

I'll swap with you. I could take winter all year long.

I like the personification of that "dreaded heat" as it "flexes torturous muscles." We have so little summer heat here so we are spared some torture but it's always wise to wear hats. Enjoyed your haiku, Yvonne!
