Thank you for the introduction of Gene. He sounds even from a young age to be a worthwhile, responsible guy.
I liked your introduction of the monkey bars and seesaws. Ours were always on cement as were the slides. Funny, or just lucky we never ended up with broken bones.
I enjoyed the read. It was well told.
Regards,
Mary

Hi Bill. that was a harsh lesson to learned for everybody and a very tragic one. But Gene rose to the challenge, as his father fell apart, or the rest of them would have been lost. For a ten year old to do that is admirable. Ulla:)))

Thank you, Ulla, for giving this a look. Gene had a hard row to hoe.

I would guess that your friend, Gene was successful throughout his life. He became responsible because it was thrust upon him, but not everyone would take up such a cup and fill it. Well written, Bill. Nancy:)

What a difficult life for him - and what an admirable character he had, to be the de facto mother of the little ones. Your story is very well written, and quite vividly expressed. Great work.

Excellent, yes the dangers of childhood were dismantled by the absence of fear, then as we grow fear is taught to us by the absence of knowledge, then knowledge becomes our own enemy, very well written****kahpot

You did a good job showing readers Gene's character from when he was young to adulthood and beyond. I like the way you described those 'unlawful' playground equipment pieces. Apparently, they did you no harm. Gene seemed like a great friend and one who grew up before his time.
Thanks for sharing.
Respectfully, Jan

Some people are born with that gene, others seem to develop it over time and as necessary. The caregivers, they are special people. Those of us who are not of that category are blessed to have them in our lives. They are often the only things that keep us from falling completely apart in disastrous times and situations. You and his family were lucky to have him in your lives.

Hi Bill I liked the pacing of this little story about a Pal. It left me wanting much more though. So, to that end it certainly is good writing from start to finish ( as far it was finished.) I hope Gene survived to come back home eventually.
I enjoyed it, Bob

It's amazing any of us survived childhood. You didn't mention that playground equipment was on the blacktop; none of this soft rubberized mulch they use now! My sister fell off the monkey bars when she was four and cracked open her chin and had stitches out in.
I feel so sad for your friend Gene. I'm also sad that you had to be there as well. 10 is too young to find out what death means. I was 11 when my dad was diagnosed with kidney disease and for seven years was on dialysis before he passed away. I am the oldest of 4. I had a lot of responsibility thrust on me from then on. I can understand Gene being the hard working man he turned into. My union rep at the Post Office thought I was making others look bad because I did my job like it should be.

Wow! He sounds like the kind of person you wouldn't want to forget. At then he must have broken hearted too to lose his mom so young and to be able to take her place for his dad and siblings is amazing. Gene definitely deserved a chapter among your memories.
