Thanks for the clever English lesson, but more so, for the chuckles and enjoyment I had. I love your smile and I can see it between all the lines you write. Thanks for sharing. smiles to you - Carol

Since Englush is not my mother language, I find preposition is the most difficult part to handle. You have summed up the voice of a writerï¼? great workã??

Oh, this is cute! I so often have the same dilemma. I know the grammar rules about ending a sentence in a preposition - or rather NOT doing it, but sometimes the sentence is too difficult to rephrase!
Well done!
Thanks for sharing. And I am faced with the same chore as you - removing and replacing the bushes that were killed by the cold weather in February. I think I'll hire someone to do it, though, Neither my husband nor I am fit to do gardening to that extent. lol
Take care!

No need to apologize for me. I enjoyed this. I like the mechanics of linguistics. Also, you probably don't realize it, but it provides a fair bit of insight into you.

Hmmm, not sure how to take that. Probably a stodgy old non-admirer of the new rules of grammar. or worse?
-
I hate new rules of grammar, and especially vocabulary. Here in France, we no longer discuss but exchange, and working visits have been replaced by immersions - I feel like a goldfish
-
Katherine, you have lost me. Heavens, what are immersions and working visits?
-
its the new French corporate jargon that I hate, and struggle with. So instead of going on a training visit to another compary we now go on an immersion (shades to me of swimming underwater). And I always found to discuss a perfectly good verb. The list of nonsense grows longer each day.
-
other than that, Mrs. Lincoln, how do you like living in France?
-
It's great fun, except when they lock the borders down. Now we are in a mess. Thank heaven for this club, and games of scrabble :)
-
are you there permanently?

I get where you're coming from.
I enjoyed your poem--it's where it's at.
Newscasters mangle the English language many times here--so worn out.
They should know better or look it up.
Thanks for sharing. I enjoyed your rant--rant on!
Respectfully, Jan

And it's not just newscasters. Others on TV making all that money, speaking poor grammar. I used to think no one edited; now I think the editors don't know any better.

You're so funny, Katharine! I laughed aloud at ""Non-fiction from the future" is an oxymoron, true?"
English is a living language and Texan English has its own rightful place, too! So I agree with you. There's a proper place of prepositions and sometimes, it's okay to let them dangle.

You're right about Texas English AND pronunciation. 'Course, being from Georgia, my accent is a hybrid. Though not my English :)
Thanks for stickin' with me. I've been planting for days and have not been on the computer except for trying to write something a day for this contest, so haven't kept up with yours. Will, I promise.

No worries, Katharine. You're investing in summer beauty!
-
thanks. It's sure looking better than winter dead.

I get what you mean about 'at'. But there are so many times when you are writing that the sentence can only end with a preposition or else it looks too contrived. Really.

absolutely. frustrating.
So... I'm through with that :)
Have to think up something for tomorrow (AND promote it) don't know why I got myself into this everyday for a month deal. :)
ah, well - onward and upward.
-
How about MLB decision to move the All Star Game to Colorado?
-
sickening. It affects all the business people and infuriates the fans. a no-win. and they want to keep The Masters Golf Tournament out of Augusta (my home town) - fat chance!

Aren't those rules something? Just when you think you've got it figured out, you discover that there's no need to bother about that any more. There used to be a distinction between may and shall, but I don't think there is any more. I doubt that anyone cares if you end a sentence with a preposition. Good analogy to casual wear for the beach. We can adjust our language usage to fit the situation. I think a lot of us do that. Interesting and lively presentation. judi

Judi, I swear, you are the most "make a person feel good" soul I know.
I blathered on about prepositions - though I DO (as you can tell) feel strongly about SOME "at-at-the ends"- ad nauseum. Thank you for your very nice comments!!
-
You're welcome. I enjoyed. You have to wonder what's the use of having rules when there are so many occasions on which they're broken. judi

Katharine,
hahahahahaha Well, either way, I feel certain we will all be in for a treat if you have a pen in your hand. You rarely disappoint. *smile* I get frustrated, too, sometimes with that rule. There are times when those preps hit like a GONG, and other times when I think- now, then, that was just fine. hahaha I'm am hard to please! Thanks!
