I read about some of the treatments for mental illness used in Mary Todd Lincoln's day, and some of them sound pretty terrible. Certainly, the men didn't listen to women's issues. They just dismissed them at female problems. Freud tried to get to the root causes of a person's mental illness. Unfortunately, psychoanalysis generally took a long time. The Freudian approach seemed to figure in the Alfred Hitchcock movie, "Spellbound." Delving into the patient's past and studying his dreams were part of the process. Great subject, and he certainly influenced the field of psychiatry. judi

Yes I remember that film Judi as Hitchcock touched on mental torment in that film, and Mary Todd suffered without understanding which is very sad, love Dolly x

Dolly,

Excellent artwork, poem and author notes here.
I think he was a little perverted to say the least
and messed up a lot of people...Young and old...

None the less an excellent poem an these lines
stood out to me:

"But Freud had found a new approach,
allowed the words to flow--
unlocked unconscious thoughts to coach"

I'd look for another approach...that's just
me. He not only looks like a freak...he was one.

I wonder if sigmund Freud ever had his patients write anything. The more I read posts on fanstory the more I see people expressing their inner thoughts in writing. Julia. Cameron, author of The Artist's Way uses writing as therapy. Just wondering.

Thank you Susan for your review, I think most poets use words this way and I expect Freud would be pleased with however people expressed themselves as long as the words came out, love Dolly x

I think I've actually been able to express my self in this way all my life, as I'm able to work through "issues" in the form of confession, as a writer you will be able to relate to that with the pondering that comes with self analysis, that's how I understand that humans have things in common, but handle them differently, great post Dolly, beautifully written, blessings Roy

Hello Dolly, this is a very well written poem about Sigmund Freud - perfect in every way. A few years ago I was obsessed with reading his books - I found them fascinating. Although not so popular today, I still think there is a lot to learn from them. Well done - Love Dorothy x

Sigmund Freud was a giant in the treatment of his patients. His innovative treatment was then proven to excel in the science of the mind. He laid the groundwork for successful therapy. Your words, for example

"that it's okay to heal our minds
express anxiety,
and note the tell-tale mental signs,
in order to be free."

relay the profound effect he had.

Dolly, your poem about Freud with your excellent words like Freud
allowed the words to flow--
woke up our unconscious thought with your rhyming
and the format you used.

The poem is well written with some specialized language. I was a psychology major in college back in the 60s. I wondered sometimes about Sigmund Freud himself.

I lasted about six months in the field and moved to technology sales and marketing. I used to tell customers that they would really feel good about themselves if they bought from me. That was the extent of my use of psychology for the next 45 years. HAHAHA

This brilliant neurologist laid the groundwork for advancements in his field that are still influential today. The world should apprgniate his recongition of patients' rights to express themselves without restraint. Your skillfully-written poem is an excellent tribube to him.
