Thank you for your review. I originally posted this in March 2021 as a work of fiction in a dribble contest. It didn't place but I brought it back when the queen passed away.
At the time I wrote it I was cognizant that she was approaching her final years though certainly didn't wish for her early demise.

This short piece is so wonderfully done! I actually burst out bawling at the message on the phone. It caught me so off guard. It shouldn't have, I mean it is your title, but it did. This is by far the best tribute to the late Queen I have read on FanStory so far, and I have read a lot.

The Royal Family has all sorts of codes for every situation and circumstance. Your notes were informative and helpful. The guard seems very matter of fact about such a significant and history making event. Best wishes in the Dribble Fiction contest.

This is very interesting and, as some tv shows say, ripped from the headlines. My respects if you are British and have just gained a new king. As an American a little older than Kind Charles, I have followed his life with interest. He seems to be a very interesting person, as his mother was.

I don't know why this would be listed as fiction since the Queen did just pass away and the heir to the throne is a male so a toast hailing a king would be appropriate. The code plays a major role in your story, however, and I like this tidbit of information.

I enjoyed this approach to the news and how to respond to it - it's a clever idea to put it into a brief story. We'll written and I'm sure there will be others soon!

On January 6th, 2021, a group of Donald Trump supporters called the Proud Boys organized a small, well-behaved tour of the US Capitol Building. They had also set a pre-coded message in case Nancy Pelosi, the Speaker of the House, and wife of Nosferatu, the undead, intercepted them and made it look like a riot. "Hang Mike Pence!" was the pre-arranged code for the retreat. The Proud Boys are still confused about why people are so upset at them. "People got the wrong idea," said Buck Skinner, a normal-looking man for having an abnormal number of chromosomes.

Thanks for this story and writing of historic facts.

-This importance of bridges in London culture and history, definitely would support this choice of coded messages to communicate the end of an era.
-Tones of irony and shades of the true sentiments of a percentage the peoples voice, perhaps.

You've captured the essence and sentiments of the last 24 hours, and the public relations effectiveness of the monarchy, in a very well written dribble fiction.

This is an enjoyable short, John. You have organized it well and have chosen your lines carefully. It had a subtle reality referencing the guard. The toast was perfect. Best, JohnC.

You wrote a great story in very few words. You picked your words well - "...barked out a toast to the stunned patrons" was a great phrase. Thanks for sharing, and best wishes to you.
