This is quite an amusing ode to a chair. It made me smile all the way. Your picture shows a chair that certainly saw better days. You did a good job on this one and I'm looking forward to reading more of your work.

Thanks so much for the kind review Carol. I have other articles on Fan Story, but I'm afraid I won't be writing any more for awhile. Work beckons me, and it might be a few months before I return. I'm so glad you enjoyed this though. Have a blessed day.

You had me hooked with your first two lines:
Oh chair, oh chair, my lovely old chair
How often you welcomed my large derriere
There are a few other examples of sublime rhyme, too!
A fine mix of self-deprecating humour and nostalgic regret. I sometimes feel that my joints could do with a bit of judicious mortis and tenon work, too!

Thanks so much for your kind review and comments. I'm getting ready to go down and work on my 1945 vintage wooden trolling boat. It would be so nice to replace parts on my body like I replace the rotten planks on the boat. Ah well, one can only hope. Have a great evening.

What a wonderful story-poem about your faithful old friend. I also get very attached to old furniture. It's nice to think a new future awaits... both for your old chair and for your derriere.
I love the rhyme with frugal and Google!

To sit on a (remove 'a') an old swivel chair

But I didn't fret, nor did I cry or (remove 'or' repeated) or swear

Your legs were strong towers, you (your?) swivel sublime

Thanks so much for the kind review and the comments. I went through after I read what you had mentioned and corrected them. I appreciate you pointing them out. It's like someone running around with the need for a Kleenex and no one wanting to mention that their nose needs wiped. Thanks again.
    Have a blessed day.

Haha... I had that experience yesterday. Apparently i went through most of the day with a black smudge on my chin that nobody mentioned.

Pretty nice! I really loved reading this piece; it was funny and sad and creative, with a touch of nostalgia. I'm glad the chair isn't going to furniture hell. That would have been an inglorious end to a thing that supported one's end. Nice work!

Thanks so much for the kind review. I'm certain that if there was a furniture hell, it would have avoided it. It was a good and faithful chair. Take care.

You certainly had strong affection for your special chair, and have gone to extraordinary lengths to keep it! You have even immortalized the special one in verse! Very creative, and well done.

    Hello Wendy,
I did like that chair. It was just the right height to see out over the front window of my boat, and it was easy enough to get in and out of the cabin door so I could access the engine. I couldn't find another unfortunately. Thanks for the kind review.
    Blessings.

This is so nice. Congratulations. I can tell this chair means a great deal to you. I also try to fix the things i am really attached to over and over again when they break. They are irreplacable. The poem is quite funny too when you describe how it supports you. A delightful read.

Thanks so much for your kind review. I wish it could have been fixed, but it wasn't to be. All good things must come to an end I guess.
    Have a great day.

This is a terrific story you've told about your friend the chair. It's hard to let things go, I know because I'm somewhat of a hoarder. My husband uses a small stool everyday that his grandfather made. It's over a 100 years old and still going strong. Great poem and picture, best of luck in the contest. :)

Thank you so much for your kind review. I did all I could to salvage that chair. It just served it's purpose so well. The one I have now is much more comfortable, but it's hard to remove from the cabin when I need to access the engine room. Have a wonderful evening.

How funny, creative and clever. I have to give you a six as you lighten my mood in such a delightful poem. Also, I have seen poems of sun, stars, flowers, animals, and happy and broken hearts, but I do not remember any ode to a chair.
Good job.
Regards,
Mary

Thank you so much Mary. I'm truly honored. It was one of my first attempts at a poem. It came out of the blue while I was on the boat. It's funny where inspiration will come from. Have a wonderful evening.

I feel like you must be an awesome person based on this poem. It is equal parts funny and endearing! I think this poem is a beautiful homage to anything we own for a long period of time, especially something as useful as a chair. This chair has so much symbolism: the stages of life, changes as one ages, the grounding feeling when near something familiar. I truly love this poem and will think about it for days (especially when my derriere is in my favorite chair haha!)

Thanks so much Colleen. You'll have to ask my wife how awesome she thinks I am. Your review is going to make me need to go buy a bigger hat to accommodate my increasing head size. I've been blessed with a good sense of humor. I hope you have a blessed evening.

That is - if you'll pardon the word - adorable!
You should frame it!
There are some inanimate things I should probably say adieu to, also.
You may have saved my bacon, trying to think of things to write about for this unfortunate choice of contest.
Now, you live on a boat??? How fascinating. You kind of snuck that little bit in. Or were you just on it at the time?

Thanks so much Katherine. I'm glad you enjoyed it. No, I only live on the boat when I'm fishing. It's tough to be onboard for any length of time. It's an old wooden fishing boat, but it has a stove and a bed and keeps the water out (most of the time). It's funny how we become attached to different things. The chair was very practical though. I could see out over the bow and swivel in it when I was bored and could spill things on it without worrying about the mess. The chair I have now is more comfortable, but it's not as tall and when I need to change the oil or access the engine for some other reason, it's a bear to get out of the door. Too big! Whine, bitch, complain. The whole world should be so blessed as to have my problems. Thanks again for the generous review. Have a blessed day.
