I love your choices of names May and June, "Harry meets Sally" (the movie title) and "Dick and Jane" (I remember those elementary school readers). Great descriptions. But who were the three noisy guys?

Congratulations on the win!!

    thanks, Helen!!
Oh - the 3 noisy guys were just that - I guess, an excuse for the gals to move to a more private spot and continue their conversation.
    Thanks for the cute congrats!

Original - and imaginative! Well done in thinking up this story! it is well written, witty and humorous, and is a good entry for this contest, so I send good wishes.

Misery loves company and these two have the misery in company. How long the friendship will last is questionable being built on misery and alcohol.

my goodness, friendships can only last with happy people drinking cokes? For a writer who passes up truth for fact, your comment seems rather a matter of opinion. However, thank you for reading my entry.

I have seen many men and women that are friends at the bar pass unknowing in the grocery.

Rikki, the contest is supposed to be about two women who meet in a bar, share a secret and become friends. That is what i wrote about.

I enjoyed your story. The coincidences are a bit far-fetched, but seem believable in this context. The DIALOG is what really earns this story five stars. I'd like to see what happens next. Rod

of course they are - just a fun piece, but I really appreciate your comment about the dialogue - which happens to be, for me, the most fun thing to write.
    PS
I'd like to see what happens next, myself. :)

Just loved this, and I'll classify this among those that can be written about any situation they can, because we can, it a great make believe world, created in the writing of these marvellous stories. My wife also had a chortle at this. So good luck, you deserve it. Blessings Roy

Your dialogue-based story is excellent in every respect--skillfully put-together, smoothly and logically progressing, and entertaining--with surprising points of plot and theme.

Very clever to reference "When Harry Met Sally" and "Trouble with Dick and Jane." I just hope this doesn't end up as a May-June romance. Cheatin' hearts seem to abound here. Just a couple of things:

"appropriate name" sounds stilted. Why not "nickname?"

You also write "the two females." Why not "women?" Are they not human?

thanks for your comments. I used the word "appropriate" because that is what I meant ( to refrain from being crude). also, what's wrong with females?
reply by Susan Newell on 19-Mar-2021
Okay. I missed the appropriate. I might have seen it better as an adverbial context. Females it is.

A story with a fair bit of humour and and a very open end. It is written mostly in dialogue which is one of the best ways to show and not not tell, which is so important these days it seems.

Oh! This is soooo good, and creative. How did you ever think this up? I couldn't stop laughing. First, May and June. Then Dick and his bimbo Jane. But when I read Harry meets Sally, I knew this warranted six stars. I surely hope you win the contest. Best wishes.

You made me smile...cute story about random connections we find in our lives at times when we most need them. That's comforting.
