Oh my goodness, Scott is a very good man! What a wonderful idea! I concur that plaques to update the truth about some of our so called heroes who are commemorated with statues, might be a better solution than tearing them done.

I prefer Scott's approach rather than trying to change history by smashing statures. I like the fact that he cares about history and wants to preserve it but makes it clear something like that will happen in the present day.

Liz,

Nice. The whole idea of REMEMBERING what folks have gone through. Now there's a fine concept. Recalling with pride what strength and courage it took to get them to the places their family is presently. Hmmm... That sounds like a great alternative.

BTW, have you read Begin Again's 'Smile' post? I think you should.

I must admit, you are definitely a prolific writer. A very interesting piece. Shame, yes. In light of today's extremism, it's difficult to imagine positive change, but still I try. Thanks for the read. Stay well.

Brilliant idea by Scott. Here-here to you for sharing! Statue destruction sates an anger but does not recognize the importance of that old adage that "Those who do not recall history are doomed to repeat it." Moreso it strikes me as such a salient point that we do more to advance the understanding of this sordid past of slavery by remembering each slave, internalizing their plight as best we can, and vowing, as Scott has memorialized on that plaque, "Slavery in Melrose: Never Again!"

As the grandmother of three beautiful children of mixed race: African American and Caucasian, I salute him...and you for sharing this!

This is an excellent commentary on the problem of slavery in the South of the USA, and how even today we need to come to terms with the issue. Honestly, there seems to be more and more horrors everywhere we look now. It's a full-time job just scratching the surfaces.

Hello Liz.

This is an awesome post. I have used the following quote in a couple of posts. We have a post modern process in America that says everything before today is BAD! It is a great way to undermine a society and culture.

One of the best quotes I have heard about changing history is: "The most effective way to destroy people is to deny and obliterate their own understanding of their history." George Orwell

That is exactly what is happening in America today. I wrote in another post that "All of life is history, except for this moment."

You did a good job, Liz, telling of Scott's pans and actions. As town historian, he has the best interests of the town in mind. What he did, and what he's planned, serve to remind the town of its dark history. Thanks for sharing.
Respectfully, Jan

It all sounds so crass, having slaves and leaving them to someone like they were a piece of furniture. Does one wonder how these people viewed their world? Thank God saner minds prevailed and that world was buried. Now, however, saner minds? Smashing statues????
Scott is saner.
