What a fine thing this man did after finding out about the past of this house. Life was different back then and we can't put blame on any one person for it, collectively this was allowed to happen. I enjoyed reading about your friend here Liz, love Dolly x

Hi Liz,
I also have a friend who is Saint John's historian. His name is David Goss, and he has written quite a few books, at least 15. He has used 5 of my own poems. I love it when he offers me an assignment. Many are on local ghosts around our little city. But I have done a couple on Loyalists, too. You should tell Scott to gather as many stories as he can, and he'll soon have enough for a book. A lot of investigating, but that's part of the fun.
That's interesting about the slavery in your hometown from ages past. History haunts!
Nicely penned!
Hugs,
Kimbob

Isn't it amazing how everything is written to image the past for the future and yet what usually happens is that history is tainted with lies. What can we really believe. I love how blacks praise Abraham Lincoln, but few have any idea of his true intentions. His plan wasn't about freedom, it was about sending them back to wherever they came from. Back to where slavery is still practice in many areas. Thanks for sharing.

There's presently a Sunday TV series on Lincoln--haven't seen it but the promo acknowledges "he wasn't perfect" and as for freeing the slaves "it's complicated"

Without even knowing anything about Scott, other than the things you've said, I already figured him for doing the right things. :-)

Liz, I fear the cancel culture will not be satisfied with a plaque giving homage to the slaves. They will want the plaque to stand it as a white privilege that the slaves ever existed.

It must be so interesting for Scott to be so close to the town's history. Even the leading families of the time owned slaves. The plaque is a great idea. I don't think there should be a fear of slavery happening again in Melrose. Not likely to happen. That book about the Lynde family is quite a find. judi

First, I enjoyed the story. Scott is an interesting and caring man who finds the truth and brings it into the light. I think many in the North assume that slavery was more a Southern state issue because of the Civil War.
Your writing of Scott and his research shows that this is a myth.
Very well done in that you also bring Scott's story to light.
Regards,
Mary

I read with interest a small piece of American history and your friend Scott's one-man mission to recreate a part of past history for posterity. I would prefer to recreate the achievements of the past instead. Thank you for sharing!

You have the most interesting friends, as do they in you.

The intelligence and maturity displayed by your friend Scott are sorely lacking in much of the population who are running around smashing instead of teaching. He obviously went through a school system that taught students how to learn, as opposed to today's school systems in much of the western world which teach students not much of anything.

I admire the meticulousness of his endeavor and his dedication to Truth. I also admire how thoughtfully you wrote about his project, letting his actions speak for themselves and him, as opposed to just telling us that he's a nice guy.
I would love to see the house he built. Is there a chance you can post pictures?

Thanks for the story, and if I ever make it to MA again (corona-na-na), his site is a visit worth anybody's while.

Yes! Let's improve the shit instead of removing it? You know what I mean though. Improvements are necessary, ignorance or ignoring is stupid. That's not politically correct but it took me three times for my phone to recognize politically. Dammit technology is making me lazy. Shit. I had a story to go with this(scrolling back up) and I don't remember. Lol

I'm truly sorry that I used up my last six for this deserves a six. I think it is important that every town have a historian. Our town, where I grew up has a museum of sorts at the now defunct "Meat Locker". I went through the last time I was home and low and behold I found my name and picture among the "Archives." I guess I'm an official antique.
