Bill, this is a stunning piece of writing. I can see all the images so clearly. I was genuinely moved at the end. What a haunting image of the father making his way back home. Lovely and truthful work.

I have settled on this back story: Kenny is a bit detached and does not equate his father buried in the snow with the reality of this revelation. He may have even seen his father there as the snow fell. The father may have argued with his wife about her affairs and she figured he had ditched the family.

I love that Kenny's mother came to the quick assumption that her husband had abandoned the family, yet waited an appropriate amount of time before she started dating...every Tom, Dick, and Harry! Love the visual at the end with the bright red coat against the snow.

The wife must not of loved her husband that much to have started dating after only thirty days and not even listing him as a missing person.
