This is so true. There is beauty in aging which often goes unnoticed. You were wise enough to see that. Hopefully, this will encourage others to see it, too.

The cult of eternal plastic surgery loveliness misses the way character and the passage of life is revealed. I really enjoyed the viewpoint in your poem where history through a connecting smile is realised and valued as beautiful. And it took an artistic comparison to a decorative park bench to make it apparent - nicely done, a well-executed haibun (not that i know much about them).
Gordon Lightfoot was a bonus - I haven't heard his music for ages, but awoke again to how much I used to enjoy it. I'll be playing his songs again now.

Hello Sal.

You use lots of descriptive terms in the poem. The detailed descriptions of everything from her aged face to the garden bench draws a wonderful verbal vision of the picture.

Good luck in the contest.

This was good. Who is the old lady? Loved the picture. I know I have to come up with more for the review. The layout is good and I hope to read more of your stuff soon. No spags.

So true! A superficial observation can never show us the beauty of the soul of a person. I like how you showed us the artwork of the bench and God's art in the person's soul. All summarized perfectly in your poem at the end. Best wishes in the haibun contest!

Okay, this is a different set of thinking about a person. The description of a person is very different in this poem. Excellent work! No grammatical errors. Thanks for sharing!

This work has reached the exceptional level

This is so exquisitely written with such a relevant topic to most everyone. It's funny that you used visual images. I seem to always want to do the same. I tell my kids that the very best thing about losing my eyesight is that I am unable to judge people based on appearance, even if I wanted to. Awesome poem. Hugs to you, and blessings always.

Sally:

More and more, I am drawn to these Haiburn and am starting to get
an itch to write one. Maybe I'll private message you with my first try
so I don't make a complete buffoon of myself. This picture reminds
me of a very kind woman I knew many, many years ago who always
loved me unconditionally. Gordon Lightfoot is another of my
favorites.

I appreciate the wonderful review, dear Jan. Yes, of you write both prose and poetry these are so fun. I was strictly a prose writer for the longest time before I ventured into poetry. Sending my best today as always, Sally XOs...
