I owned a dog called Whisky, a black and white spaniel cross, she would greet me at the bus coming home from school, I loved her so much, one day she wasn't there, I found out later mum had taken her to an animal refuge, she lied that she'd run away, but I smelt a rat, I was only ten, little boys need a dog. I still feel sad to this day. Beautifully written Mary, a delightful but very sad story. Well done, blessings Roy. I think your mum loved you too. Blessings Roy

Thank you Roy for your kind review and thoughts. There are pets that enter your heart and stay for a lifetime.
I know that my mother loved me, not a question at all. I just wanted to point out how close she was to Sandy that is why I suspect she notified the newspaper.
    Blessing to you and family.

Mary,

What a dear! Can you even imagine that sweetie trudging through all that traffic and nonsense, regardless of the time or weather - just to get to her family and home? She knew where she belonged. How sweet!

It's always hard to lose a family pet. Folks who haven't had one of these precious family members have no clue. So glad you shared her story. Hugs-

I think that is horrible. How can somebody do that. Maybe another letter to the papers would have worked. This only proves my theory, housing associations have no heart. Good luck in the contest and thank you for sharing.

This is a beautiful story. Dogs are amazing creatures and they have away of endearing themselves to us in such away that it breaks our hearts when we lose them. I hate hearing of dog being separated from the family they have become attached to or to hear of one being abused.

Mary,

Your writing and story was beautiful. I could feel the love Sandy had for her family, and I'm sad with you over her tragic end.

Our yard alone consisted of 2 (two - spell out numbers one through ten) lengthy three-story masonry .

What a wonderful story - despite the sad ending. Really poignant and well told. It's Sandy's story, but it's also the story of your childhood, of the times and of the neighbourhood. Really well done. Good luck in the contest.

This is a lovely story about a well-loved and loyal pet. It's so sad that poor Sandy was forced away, not once, but twice. It's amazing that she made her way back to you so many times.

One thing: "Back then, there were no lease(leash) laws..."

Oh, how very sad! She definitely bonded with you, her real family, and never felt at home with your uncle's family. I'm glad that you got to have her for the time that you did. Best wishes in the contest!
Comment:

Thank you for the review and comments. It is appreciated. I made the correction. Funny, no matter how many times, I read it, I completely missed leash!

Heartwarming and wrenching both. Stunning narration--you relay the events and let the feelings speak for themselves.

Sandy would have to either go through the old Scollay Square section in Boston, which was a busy and decaying large retail/mercantile area [COMMA] to get to the Longfellow Bridge, or she would

way, Sandy had at least a 4[HYPEN]mile trip

This is a beautiful, though poignant, story about Sandy. I enjoyed reading it. You did a great job with your contest entry. I could see Sandy in everything you mentioned. What fun she and the kids had playing ball. What determination she had, too, to travel from your uncle's home back to her real home. Dogs are so much smarter than humans give them credit for being. Thanks for sharing and best wishes.
Respectfully, Jan
