All those dangerous trips through city traffic just to get home to the family she loved, Sandy was a champ. And then, to be left to die of a broken heart. What a sad way for such a diligent companion to pass on.

This is a marvelous bittersweet story. I ache for you, dear Mary. It is hard to lose such beloved dog. This is truly amazing how Sandy made her way back to you over and over again. Your vintage photo documents the truth of the matter.
One improvement for your consideration. Mainly, this comes from my copy editor who continuously goes over my work for print. He tells me to always write out the number, for instance, eighteen apartments. It makes for a smoother and consistent read. I trust my editor in this, and as I read other writer's publications, I see that this is true. I hope this is helpful and does not offend. I think you have a winner here. :))

Thank you for your review and kind thoughts. As to the numbers, I always appreciate any help I get. I am grammatically challenged.
I have truthfully been bounced around on numbers. I had them all written out and someone tells me not too! I sort of agree that written out is better. I might just go back to that.

What a sad ending to a happy dogs life. Sandy proved her love over and over again, and in then end died because she couldn't come home. I can't beleive the authorities threatened your dad with eviction if he didn't get rid of her. After the rules had changed, too. This was written beautifully, Mary. It seems that you lost your mother at a very young age as well. I'm so sorry. Good luck in the contest! :)) Sandra xx

Thank you Sandra. I appreciate your kind thoughts and review. My mom died when I was 7. I think if she was alive, she would have fought tooth and nail to keep Sandy.

I'm sure she would. At least she was waiting for Sandy so both are together again. :) I hope so, anyway, I'm expecting mine to be waiting for me!!

I too have fond memories of my old dog friends. The dog I have now is very faithful and hates it when I have to travel without him. The memories you brought out in your work are precious.

This offering is moving and heartbreaking! Having loved "furry friends" thoughout my lifetime, I can well imagine Sandy dying of a broken heart.
You tell your story with love and respect.
A few areas that need to be edited:
~ No matter how many times she was sent back; (,) she would return to us with a daily trek from Boston to Cambridge.
~In the 1950's (1950s) that section of the city had winding crowded streets and poorly maintained tenement houses.
~ I remember her knowing one trick, and that was to give us her paw. I think any human would be tired and sore from shaking hands so much, (;) however, for Sandy to give anyone her paw over and over was a joy as it gave her human attention.
